Kaitlyn‘s review of Finlay Donovan Knocks’em Dead (Finlay Donovan, Book 2) by Elle Cosimano
Mystery published by Minotaur Books 1 Feb 22
There were many times I could not take this book seriously. I legit closed the book and laughed out loud at how foolish some of the moments were. Then I promptly picked the book back up and kept reading, because I was completely and wholeheartedly invested. No matter how silly it seemed, it still worked.
Finlay and Vero are at it again, except this time the target someone wants dead is Finlay’s ex-husband. Instead of killing him, they’re trying to keep the idiot alive. Quite frankly, I would have been just fine letting Steven meet his demise after everything he did to Finlay. But I guess she has a point, he is the father of her children, so I sort of get why she’s trying to save him. 😒
Anyhow, love Finlay and Vero just as much in this one. Although I am thoroughly Team Nick and the fact that this relationship has not happened yet is incredibly frustrating. I don’t know how there is any contest here, Nick is clearly the winner. And this is coming from a girl who has her own health insurance, so I’m not even choosing him for the cop benefits. 😋
Book 3 comes out in January and I’ll definitely be waiting for it!
Summary:
Finlay Donovan is—once again—struggling to finish her next novel and keep her head above water as a single mother of two. On the bright side, she has her live-in nanny and confidant Vero to rely on, and the only dead body she’s dealt with lately is that of her daughter’s pet goldfish.
On the not-so-bright side, someone out there wants her ex-husband, Steven, out of the picture. Permanently. Whatever else Steven may be, he’s a good father, but saving him will send her down a rabbit hole of hit-women disguised as soccer moms, and a little bit more involvement with the Russian mob than she’d like.
Meanwhile, Vero’s keeping secrets, and Detective Nick Anthony seems determined to get back into her life. He may be a hot cop, but Finlay’s first priority is preventing her family from sleeping with the fishes… and if that means bending a few laws then so be it.
With her next book’s deadline looming and an ex-husband to keep alive, Finlay is quickly coming to the end of her rope. She can only hope there isn’t a noose at the end of it…
