Kaitlyn‘s review of Neon Gods (Dark Olympus, Book 1) by Katee Robert
Paranormal Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 1 Jun 21

I don’t know, this was entertaining, but I think I liked A Touch of Darkness more. In that they were actual gods and goddesses with powers, which was more fun. Everyone in this was just…human? I’m still not really sure. Was Olympus hidden from the rest of the world? Did the other humans know about it? Where was the magic? Where were the godly powers? I wanted some fantasy in this.

I mean, I still read this in less than 24 hours, so, clearly, I enjoyed it. I’ve yet to meet a Hades I didn’t love and this was no exception. But, still, I wanted more. Maybe that’s because I’ve binged a bunch of books the last few days and none of them were fantasies, so I might be having withdrawals. Maybe that colored my opinion a little here and what I really wanted was for someone to blow something up with their mind, summon the dead, or grow a flower.

I’m aware this isn’t the type of book that should have the plot scrutinized closely and yet here I am. I guess I’m in a mood, not a slump, because I’m tearing through books like usual, but nothing’s making me excited. Maybe I just miss having SJM in my life and need a reread.

Well, this turned more into an existential crisis than a review. Oops. Not a bad book, I recommend it, especially if you’re looking for a Hades and Persephone retelling. If I read a book fast, that’s my main gauge for loving it. It’s just the lack of fantasy whimsy in my life right now that’s got me down.

Grade: B+

Summary:

He was supposed to be a myth. But from the moment I crossed the River Styx and fell under his dark spell…he was, quite simply, mine.

Society darling Persephone Dimitriou plans to flee the ultra-modern city of Olympus and start over far from the backstabbing politics of the Thirteen Houses. But all that’s ripped away when her mother ambushes her with an engagement to Zeus, the dangerous power behind their glittering city’s dark facade.

With no options left, Persephone flees to the forbidden undercity and makes a devil’s bargain with a man she once believed a myth…a man who awakens her to a world she never knew existed.

Hades has spent his life in the shadows, and he has no intention of stepping into the light. But when he finds that Persephone can offer a little slice of the revenge he’s spent years craving, it’s all the excuse he needs to help her—for a price. Yet every breathless night spent tangled together has given Hades a taste for Persephone, and he’ll go to war with Olympus itself to keep her close…
