Sandy M’s review of Ruthless Heart (Heart, Book 1) by Beth Williamson
Western Historical Romance published by Beth Williamson 8 Jun 21

Beth Williamson has been an author I’ve really enjoyed in the past. However, it’s been a while since I’ve read her work. So when I discovered this book is the beginning of a new series from her, I decided to try once again. I’m so very surprised at my reaction to the beginning of this story…

… Mostly because I didn’t get past the second chapter. I always try to read at least six or more chapters to give both book and author a chance to change my mind about whatever issue is giving me fits. This time, however, I just couldn’t read anymore.

Eliza has learned her father is sending a bad man after her younger sister, who has run away from her nasty, evil husband – along with another of his wives. This is in Utah in the time of polygamy and believing women are nothing more than men’s property. Defying her father for the first time, Eliza discovers it’s Grady Wolfe who will be hunting her sibling. So she finds the man in town and follows him into the wilds, despite the fact all she has is book learning on how to survive.

Because the man himself isn’t about to help her out. Which irked the heck out of me. Yes, he’s an assassin, among other things, but leaving a woman on her own to find her way by moonlight, all the while knowing she’s not what she says, is not the way to make a romance hero likable, in my mind. Especially because he can’t help but think about her as he goes on his merry way, while she could be mauled by any wild animal or any other number of things.

And then the book learning Eliza loves doesn’t let her down as she builds fires and tracks Grady, all of which is just a bit unrealistic, in my humble opinion. So I gave up. I didn’t care for either character, both of them neither likable nor sympathetic enough for me. Life’s just too short to be irritated with romance characters.

Grade: DNF

Summary:

He led her astray, and she never wanted to go back.

Sheltered all her life, Eliza Hunter never imagined herself alone in the vast Utah plains, much less trailing a mysterious, rugged man hired to hunt down her beautiful younger sister. Unable to reveal the truth about her pursuit of him, Eliza plays student to the teacher, transforming herself in the process. And she when she finds herself sharing the warmth of Grady’s campfire, wrapped in his arms, hypnotized by his power, soon she is a naive spinster no more…

Grady Wolfe is more than a loner, he’s a man forever on the run, an assassin with a dark past and an even darker future. With a body and soul finely honed from living off the land, Grady knows he should leave the irresistible woman alone, but she stirs something in him he hasn’t felt before. Now he’s lost in the woods for the first time in his life—with a dangerous job to do. And no one—not even the distracting Eliza—is going to stop him.
