Book CoverStevie‘s review of Never Too Late for Heroes (Superheroine Collection, Book 6) by A.L. Brooks
Lesbian Superhero Romance published by Ylva Publishing 17 Mar 20

I’m loving the occasional one-day-only free books that Ylva has been giving us during the ongoing pandemic. I’ve not managed to grab all of them, but they’re increasing my awareness of different authors and series, whether I get to read the offered books there and then or not. I was already aware of the Superheroine Collection through The Power of Mercy Graphic Novel Kickstarter of a couple of years ago, but had yet to properly dive into the actual novels. So when this one popped up as a freebie, I was quick to grab it and start discovering this shared universe in more depth, particularly given its focus on older women having adventures (and also falling in love all over again).

The four surviving Powers Cousins – once part of a five-woman superpowered team fighting against the even more powerful and evil sixth cousin – are holed up in a retirement home, mourning the loss of Fyre (another of the good ones) and Jewel (the evil one) six years previously, as well as the disappearance of their abilities following the final showdown. None of the staff or other residents at the home know who the women once were, but now it seems like their powers are returning and one staff member in particular is getting suspicious. Meanwhile, Agent Geena Fox, who was the Power Cousins’ handler and arranged for their current accommodation, has never given up hope that Fyre, whom she was in love with, survived the firefight and might one day return to her.

Geena is looking forward to retirement and is less than pleased when she is assigned a new rookie partner, Leigh Walker, the daughter of an influential senator. However, there has been a sighting of a woman who may well be Fyre, and so Leigh is sent off to investigate. It transpires that not only did Fyre survive, but so did Jewel, and she is also now back on the scene and up to her old tricks, planning world domination.

Geena and Leigh get all five of the Powers Team back together and help the four retirees regain their strength before going after Jewel. Now joined by Dana, the suspicious staff member, they race across the country hoping to stop Jewel before she causes even more damage than the last time she was at large.

This was a fun romp. The will-they-won’t-they relationship between Geena and Fyre was a little frustrating at times, but at least most of the other characters shared my opinions on that. I liked the secondary romance between the two younger characters as well, and was taken by the female POTUS and her First Lady. I definitely want to read more from this collection now.

Summary:

Agent Geena Fox is counting down the days to her retirement. On one bittersweet day six years ago, her team of superheroes defeated Jewel, the world’s most evil villainꟷbut Geena’s secret lover died in the process. Now her boss has assigned her a rookie partner, Leigh Walker, and that’s the last thing Geena needs. She sends the woman off on a wild goose chase searching for a long-lost missing person to get her out of her sight. However, what Leigh finds will turn Agent Fox’s world upside down.

Meanwhile, over in a retirement home in Missouri, four old women sharing the surname Power are arousing suspicion with their strange behavior. Their nosy nurse is convinced they are not what they seem. Geena and Leigh meet with the mysterious Powers, and realize the women might hold the key to stopping Jewel, once and for all.
