Veena’s review of Looking for a Cowboy (Heart of Texas, Book 5) by Donna Grant
Romantic Suspense published by St Martin’s Paperbacks 27 Oct 20

Adoption of newborn babies is big business. Pregnant women are being kidnapped and their babies cut out of their bodies while the mother’s throats are slit.  P.I. Marlee Frampton arrives in Clearview, Texas, hot on the trail of a baby boy who was harvested in that great state. Her target is the Harpers, who have recently adopted a newborn. Not only are the Harpers a prominent family in town, but Cooper Owens is best friends with them. Can Marlee use their attraction to get an inside track to the Harpers?

For Marlee it all began when her pregnant twin sister is found with her throat cut and her baby cut out of her. Now Marlee is on a crusade to find justice and attempt to stop the baby harvesting ring. She eats, sleeps, dreams her cases and while she’s made some inroads, the closest and freshest trail is this one that leads to Clearwater.  There is an instant spark of attraction between her and Cooper when they meet, and, given that Cooper is best friends with her suspects, the Harpers, she decides to see if she can leverage the attraction.

While that move might have backfired on her, the Harpers and Cooper are honorable people and suddenly Marlee is working with a team of local police and ex-special forces to try to nail down the kidnappers. Of course, in parallel her romance with Cooper heats up in a really good way as well.

The story is fast paced and keeps readers hopping, especially since the author gives us a unique insight into the kidnappers in sort of a split screen kind of way.  I like how the team starts to corelate facts and start creating a grid and tracking down cases and getting close to the kidnappers. Will Marlee ever recover her niece, even though the little girl will be ten years old now?

All the stories in this series have been great, but this one is the best of the the five, in my book anyway.  Can’t wait to see where this series goes next.

Grade: A

Summary:

A beautiful stranger has come to Clearview, asking questions that are nobody’s business. Cooper Owens also wasn’t born yesterday. He knows that this out-of-towner is hiding a dark secret of her own. Much as he knows he should head in the other direction, he can’t make himself turn away. . .

P.I. Marlee Frampton always wanted to lead a nice quiet life, working as a cop in her local police department. But that dream came to an end when her sister was murdered―and her baby kidnapped. Now Marlee’s come to Texas to investigate the Harpers, who may be linked to shady adoption agencies. Cooper can’t believe that his friends could be involved in anything so sinister…and soon he makes it his mission to help Marlee discover the truth―and keep her safe in his arms.
