Veena’s review of Guardian’s Grace (Dark Protectors, Book 12) by Rebecca Zanetti
Romantic Fantasy published by Lyrical Press 13 Oct 20

I’ve recently read a few books by Rebecca Zanetti. So when this one came up on NetGalley, I requested it, not realizing that it’s Book 12 in a long-standing series. No surprise then that I was a bit lost on the back stories of some of the characters – even the back story on our two protagonists – because I kept feeling that I’ve jumped into the middle of a book.  I will say that when I managed to follow along and put aside this strange feeling of not knowing everyone and everything, I managed to quite enjoy myself.

Grace is so prickly and so determined not to rely on anyone – not her sister or her mate, who came to her rescue when she was lying in a coma.  Of course, that’s not even a patch on her mate who, in his own way, has been keeping tabs on her even as he lets her believe that she’s footloose and fancy free.  Once we get past all the prickle, the story picks up steam – or should I say fire crackle and burn – because it’s not just about the chemistry but that every thing these two touch seems to go up in flames.

When Grace finally manages to figure out what’s going on and who’s targeting her and why, she’s managed to break long-held alliances and made herself and her mate outcasts.  As for the villains, no one saw them coming. I totally loved the suspense and how it all came down.  Now all she’s got to do is rescue herself? Or perhaps hold on long enough for Adare to find and rescue her.

I enjoyed all the colorful characters and will have to go back and find this book list to read how it all came about.

Grade: B

Summary:

Duty—or desire?

Vampire soldier Adare O’Cearbhaill’s default setting is cranky.  Or irritated.  Or down-right hostile.  Still, as a Highlander of honor and duty, he stepped up to save an enhanced and special human female by mating her—with merely a bite and a brand. The last person he wants in his life is a fragile human, yet he can’t get her out of his mind as she regains her strength before taking off for parts unknown. And when he discovers she is in danger, nothing can stop him from hunting her down—whether she likes it or not.

There’s only one way to find out . . .

Photographer Grace Cooper has had it with vampires, demons, and the rest of an immortal world she was happier not knowing about. She also doesn’t believe she’s destined for some great battle because of an old birthmark. Forget the fact that her mate is the sexiest thing on two stubborn feet, or that her brand is fading along with her health. She’ll handle things on her own—until an old enemy reappears and she learns the only way to stay alive is to actually mate, wild sex and all, with that ripped and dangerous Adare—a powerful, captivating Highlander who demands nothing less than everything . . .
