Veena’s review of My Fallen Saint (Fallen Saint, Book 1) by J. Kenner
Contemporary Romance published by Martini & Olive 15 Sep 20

Ellie Homes takes the hairpin curves of the canyon roads of her hometown on the knife’s edge of safety at dangerous speeds.  Danger is her middle name, but in this instance it’s the memories. Laguna Cortez holds traumatic memories for her. She never expected to come back, but here she is. Will this visit help her get the closure she hopes for?

Now a young woman and an investigative reporter to boot, she’s going to get a new take on her hometown and her childhood memories. Her beloved Uncle Peter might not have been the benevolent business man she remembers, but every interview, every document is leading her inexorably to a truth that is dangerous to her and most especially to her heart.

Who is Devlin Saint and why does he hold a strong fascination for Ellie, outside of the interview she’s scheduled to conduct for her magazine? I love Ellie’s courage and personality. She puts herself out there one hundred percent, holding little back, despite Devlin’s reception. She quietly goes about interviewing people and doing her job, even as the truths leave her reeling.

Devlin Saint has a lot of secrets. He has re-invented himself for the better, and that’s not even counting his billionaire status and the philanthropic work he does. He is passionate about the people his organization rescues and rehabilitates. Is he also extracting vigilante justice? All signs seem to indicate so, but there is no proof. When they finally make a pact “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” and succumb to their insane chemistry, the genie is out of the bottle and it’s not going to be easy to stuff it back inside, especially since their intimate moments are displayed in the media for all to see.

Devlin is harboring more secrets than Ellie knows, even as she asks him questions and gives him the chance to come clean. The first wave of truth is devastating. Ellie barely makes it back from that, but it appears there’s more to come, though we’ll have to wait a while to find out what is next. Will Ellie be able to accept who Devlin Saint is, complete with all the baggage that comes with him?  Clearly, she can’t resist his physical impact, but can she deal with the emotional fallout that appears inevitable?

So many questions! I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Grade: B

Summary:

Charismatic. Confident. Powerful. Controlling.

A brilliant investor with a Midas touch, Devlin Saint turned a modest inherited fortune into billions, and now operates one of the world’s foremost international philanthropic organizations. He’s a man determined to help the underprivileged, to fight injustice, and to make the world a better place. And that, at least is true.

It’s not, however, the full truth.

Because Devlin Saint is a man with a dangerous secret. One he’ll do whatever it takes to protect. And when investigative reporter Ellie Holmes turns her attention to an unsolved murder, she finds herself caught in a web of intrigue and passion as Devlin draws her closer and closer. But as the intensity and sensuality of their relationship grows, so do Ellie’s suspicions. Until she is no longer certain if the heat between her and Devlin is real, or only a façade he constructed to hide his dark and twisted secrets.
