Sandy M’s review of Quarter Miles (Runaway, Book 3) by Devney Perry
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 21 Jul 20

With each book in this series, we’re getting closer and closer to delivering that restored cherry red Cadillac that means so much to each character as they decide to take on the mission of making sure the car makes it to California, and dealing with finding love along the way. This time it’s Katherine, who was the first of their group of runaways to find a home, in Montana, the first place she landed after leaving California. She’s stayed put in the Big Sky state and has done well. Even falling in love with the second Greer son, though he looks at her as a younger sister.

So maybe it’s time to move on. Katherine readily takes over the wheel of the Caddy on the next leg of its trip – but she has an unexpected passenger. She’s trying so hard to put distance between herself and Cash, she doesn’t need his demanding self along for the ride just so he can protect her if something goes wrong.

But Cash is determined not to let Kat go all that way alone. They have their trusty quarter to guide them on this journey, taking time to enjoy the scenery and work on the issues that keep them apart, though they’re coming to those issues from very different directions. They’ve been best friends forever, it seems, so as they each begin to let their feelings truly take over, as well as getting through the speed bumps encountered on their way, they begin to find a totally different relationship than they started with.

Both characters go through change at so many emotional levels, finally realizing they can have a life they never thought would happen. What I love is how they always work any issues out together, even though it may not seem to start out that way. Cash is the one who has to play catch up when it comes to changing his feelings about Kat, despite the fact he does realize well into the trip maybe his feelings weren’t all that far off the mark for so many years – he just never let himself go there due to the fact Kat is part of his family.

I enjoyed every word of this third book in the series. There are two more books planned at this point, but I’m hoping maybe that Caddy can make a few more side trips so the series can continue to give us such wonderful journeys.

Grade: A

Summary:

Katherine Gates has been in love with Cash Greer since the moment he saved her life from a runaway goat. According to Cash, she’s the little sister he never had, the greatest roommate in the world and his favorite coworker. They’re friends—best friends.

In the dark days of her youth, it was her friendships that kept her alive and made life in a junkyard worth living. So she’s learned to shove her feelings for Cash down deep, even if that means ignoring eyes that shine brighter than the Montana summer sun and the smile that illuminates the snowiest winter day.

Except with every passing year, the denial takes its toll on her wounded heart until one day Katherine decides to take an impulsive road trip to the Oregon coast. Alone. That is, until Cash cons his way into the passenger seat.

The farther they travel, the harder it is to pretend. And when she confesses her feelings, she learns that Cash has some secrets of his own. Secrets that will either bond them together.

Or rip them apart.
