Sandy M’s review of Wild Highway (Runaway, Book 2) by Devney Perry
Contemporary Romance published by Devney Perry LLC 23 Jun 20

I’m really enjoying Devney Perry’s new Runaway series – friends who ran away from home years before, now leading very different lives they could never have imagined, are reconnecting and finding love along the way, while each is on the road in the Cadillac that binds them together to this day. This second book in the series features Gemma, the one who ran the quickest, even from her friends.

When she left years before to head to Boston, she left without a word to Katherine, the friend who needed to think things through before bolting, and also Easton Greer, the new friend who could have been so much more. Gemma has definitely made it with grit and hard work – she just sold her business for $12 million. But she’s still rudderless, not sure what to do next. So when Londyn, the heroine from the first book, offers Gemma the Cadillac they’re trying to return to their California friend who took them in as youngsters, Gemma leaves West Virginia with a stop-off in Montana in mind, to make amends with Katherine, hoping her friend has it in her heart to forgive.

What she doesn’t expect when she arrives is the old feelings for Easton to rear so fast and furious, despite his disbelief she’ll hang around any longer than necessary. To him, running is what Gemma does best. So he tosses out a dare – Gemma will be on her way before Christmas – and Gemma is determined to prove the man wrong. This gives the couple the time they need to get to know one another all over again, to rid themselves of old hurt and suspicions, and to discover previous feelings and emotions are still going strong, despite their best efforts to quash them all.

I enjoyed the slow buildup in this new relationship East and Gemma now have to navigate. The Greer family opens their arms to Gemma the second she returns, as does Katherine, whose hurt lasted quite a while after Gemma left. But she’s been amidst family all these years, hoping for love with the other Greer brother. That hope is dashed at the end of the book, giving readers a look at the next leg of this journey when Katherine decides it’s her turn driving that Cadillac and finding what she’s lacking in California. There’s two more books after Katherine’s, so I’m not sure she’ll actually make it to the Golden State before being sidelined like Londyn and Gemma.

However it goes, I can’t wait to find out.

Grade: A

Summary:

Gemma Lane built an empire. Not a small feat, considering her home as a teenager was a makeshift tent in a California junkyard. She’s dedicated her life to turning pennies into millions. She has power, fortune and prestige.

And she’s leaving it all behind.

Gemma is headed across the country in her best friend’s Cadillac when a detour in Montana reunites her with old acquaintances and a man who hasn’t changed. Easton Greer challenges her every word and tests her every limit because he doesn’t believe she’s really abandoned her riches. She ignores his snide remarks and muttered censure—until the day she’s ready to return to the wild highway, and Easton taunts her to stay.

She’ll prove to him she’s not just running back to her wealthy life, that she’s more than her money. She’ll unlock her guarded heart and hope that this time around, he’ll treasure the key.
