Book CoverVeena’s review of King’s Ransom (Kings of Sydney, Book 3) by Jackie Ashenden
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin Dare 01 Apr 19

This is a tale of good intentions that pave the road to hell or, perhaps in this case, it might be heaven.  Ajax King has the purest of motives when he kidnaps a rising crime lord’s daughter in an attempt to keep his town clean of crime. Imogen is an innocent and determined to derail all of Ajax’s plans.

So imagine a scenario when you’re about to threaten and intimidate and you find yourself pedaling backward as fast as you can. Apparently rather than being afraid or resentful, Imogen is grateful to be rescued from the prison of her father’s guards who want to preserve her innocence, only so her father can auction it off to the highest bidder. So Imogen is determined to do things on her own terms and Ajax doesn’t know how to resist her innocent allure.

There isn’t much meat to this story. Ajax was powerless at one time to act against his crime lord father, even though he ultimately put him away for his crimes. Now determined to continue on his path to clean his city of crime, he finds his plans backfiring and himself charmed by his prisoner.  Young, beautiful Imogen meets the world head on, determined to have her cake and eat it too.  It doesn’t quite work out so easily or all her way, but it’s a love story.

Ms. Ashenden is a relatively new author for me. While I enjoyed the previous book in this series, this one is a bit light and lacking.

Grade:C

Summary:

The third book in the red-hot Kings of Sydney trilogy sees Ajax King kidnapping a rising crime lord’s daughter, Imogen White. His bargaining chip is her innocence, but when all Imogen wants is to feel the raw masculinity of the eldest King, Ajax is tempted to free her from her gilded cage for good…

Decades of being the eldest son of the biggest crime lord in Sydney doesn’t leave a man without scars, and mine run deep. Now I’ll do almost anything to destroy Sydney’s criminal underworld—even kidnap my enemy’s delectable daughter. Imogen White is pristine. Perfect. And if her father won’t leave Sydney for good, then I’ll take the one thing he prizes above all—and make her mine!

Only Imogen isn’t quite the innocent I thought. She wants to be freed from her gilded prison, and damn if she isn’t looking for a little carnal education in return. She’s primal incarnate. Just like me.

But I’m no knight in shining armour. I live cold and hard. I want nothing. I need nothing. The ends always justify the means…and no one—not even a sweet little spitfire like Imogen—will thaw the ice around my cold heart. No one.
