Veena’s review of Lionheart (Moon Shadow, Book 3) by Thea Harrison
Urban Fantasy published by Teddy Harrison LLC 15 Oct 18
Change is in the air. Even as Dragos plans to retire and set up an alternate kingdom with his wife and newborn son, it’s time to wake up Oberon from his disconnected state, where the only real thing is the assassin’s weapon that is slowly but surely killing him. Enter Dr. Kathryn Shaw, personal physician to Dragos, who swoops down into the heart of the dark court with the faithful Puck ready to go to battle for Oberon’s life and ultimately his kingdom. The scintillating dialogue, her feistiness as she stands up to his royal majesty and fights side by side with him, makes this one of my favorite books in the series.
As Kathryn begins her journey from the guard station of the Dark Fae in the earth plane, she quickly leaves behind her escort and travels on “puck back” to arrive at a dying Lyonesse, to be greeted by an unhappy, disgruntled Oberon. In his quest to survive and battle with the aforementioned lethal weapon. Oberon has lost most of his sensitivity to emotion and his ability to control the weather. Suspicious of everyone, even his most faithful Puck, he is not at all a happy camper at Kathryn’s arrival.
Fortunately, Kathryn more than holds her own, makes her demands of Oberon clear, and goes about quietly and calmly performing the surgery necessary to save his life. I love her quick thinking and ingenious solutions. Oberon’s waking emotions and suspicious nature are balanced by the arrival of his people, as well as his enemies, even as he beings the mating dance with Kathryn.
The battle for Lyonesse is engaged and Kathryn refuses to be cowed, instead using her falcon to deliver damage and collect intelligence while fighting shoulder to shoulder with Oberon to defeat his enemy. Isabeau definitely deserves all that she gets and more. A great story where you get to visit with some old favorites and meet a lot of new characters. I definitely would like Puck to get his own story one of these days.
Summary:
King Oberon reigned over his Dark Court in Lyonesse for centuries until an assassination attempt laid him low. Now he lies unconscious in his snow-bound palace while his Power battles the enchantment that threatens to end his life.A skilled trauma surgeon and magic user, Dr. Kathryn Shaw reigns at the top of her profession in New York. Then comes a challenge she can’t resist—she is asked to cure the incurable. Just getting close enough to try healing Oberon is a dangerous proposition. When she does reach him, he awakens too soon.
Roused from darkness by Kathryn’s presence, Oberon confronts the beautiful stranger who claims she wants to save his life. But the enchantment has frozen his emotions. How can he learn to trust her when he can’t feel anything?
Oberon’s desire is icy, devoid of all tenderness. Not only must Kathryn match wits with him, she must also fight her reaction to his touch, because there is so much more at stake than her own endangered heart.
For the Dark Court faces its most deadly peril yet. Its ancient enemy Isabeau, Queen of the Light Court, is obsessed with its annihilation, and Oberon must be brought to remember his loyalty and affection for his people.
Because if he won’t fight for them, Lyonesse itself may very well be destroyed…
