Book CoverKristie J’s review of Everything She Ever Wanted (A Different Kind of Love, Book 1) by Liz Durano
Contemporary Romance Published by Velvet Madrid 12 Oct 16

This is a new-to-me author, but when the book showed up free on Amazon and is an older woman/younger man trope – and that’s one of my favourites – well, it was an immediate purchase.

Harlow James is the older woman heroine.  She is a very successful surgeon with a seemingly wonderful life.  Her husband is also a well-renowned surgeon and they seemed to have the perfect life on the outside.  But they didn’t.  They had been trying to have children, but a couple of miscarriages and a stillborn ripped their marriage apart, while also exposing what an asshole her husband was.  She lost her job and is on a journey, when the book opens, both physical and emotional.  She is renting a unique self-sustaining house in New Mexico, which is located far, far away from her home base in NYC, for a few months while the owner is away. One night after a particular nasty phone call from her soon-to-be ex-husband and a bottle of very expensive wine, she seriously considers suicide.  But then she reconsiders and passes out.

Dax Drexel, the owner and builder of the house, comes home the same night, not realizing his home has been rented and comes across Harlow, soon realizing what she had planned.  He comes back the next day to check on her and Harlow, thinking he’s some stooge sent by her ex, gets angry and all up in his face.  Eventually she realizes her mistake and she and Dax start a friendship.  Right away Dax is strongly attracted to her and the difference in their ages – he’s 27 and she’s 39 – doesn’t bother him at all.

Dax is a must-have kind of hero.  Besides building his own home, he has a very successful custom furniture company, and, because of his talent, sells to the elite.  He’s very protective of Harlow and really helps her out a lot in her battle with her ex, who has and is still trying to take advantage of her grief.  She’s unable to have children and it turns out he’s been cheating on her and his girlfriend is pregnant.

Harlow grew up in foster care and has never had many close friends and never has had a champion until Dax.  She does lose a few points, though, when she lies to Dax and keeps valuable information from him.  And when he finds out, I found him somewhat over-the-top cruel to her.  But this is a romance, so…

I enjoyed this book enough to pick up the next two books in the series and that’s always a good sign.  So with it being free at the moment and a book I enjoyed, I say go for it and pick it up too.

And one final reason to get it – mighty fine cover for the shallow in us.

Summary:

All she wanted was to find out where she went wrong.
Instead, she found the perfect man… too bad he’s too young.

I was never into fairy tales, but discovering a real live princess in my house reminds me of the story of the three bears and some chick who breaks into their pad, eats all their food, and sleeps in their beds.

Just like the one that’s in mine right now.

At first, I thought she was dead, but the rise and fall of her chest told me that she was just passed out, probably from the half-empty bottle of Bordeaux I’d been saving for a special occasion. Two grand down the drain, courtesy of Goldi-effing-locks here, who’s not only passed out cold, but she’s also naked.

I should walk out right now and let her be… but I can’t. Not when there’s a loaded gun next to the Bordeaux.

And it’s sitting on top of a note that begins with the words…

“I’m sorry I failed you…”
