Book CoverVeena’s review of The Warrior of Clan Kincaid (Highland Warrior, Book 3) by Lily Blackwood
Historical Romance published by St. Martin’s Paperbacks 31 Jul 18

The Wolf is the scourge of the Highlands, most especially of the Kincaids, and a royal to boot. Derryth is dispatched from her home to safety as the Kincaids prepare for war, only to end up captured and imprisoned by Cull, the general who rules the Wolf’s army with an iron hand. There are some great scenes that emphasize his total command and control of the army and yet he brings Derryth into his own tent to keep her safe!!!!

Derryth is certainly not the model prisoner, content to languish in Cull’s tent and tend to womanly tasks like mending his clothes. In true fiery Scots fashion, she sets about destroying Cull’s possessions and figuring out ways to escape.  Cull, however, is soon able to disarm her by his actions and deeds that include taking her to meet her escorts, who are imprisoned and put to work in a different part of the camp, as well as to bathing chamber and offering her first dibs on the clean, hot water.

Proximity and the weather find them moving from sharing a tent to sharing a bed to conserve body heat. Derryth is soon in the throes of sexual passion and falling in love with Cull, until she gets to meet her family’s nemesis, the Wolf, face to face. As it turns out, not all is well in the Wolf’s camp. Out of his two sons, one is extremely jealous of his father’s regard for Cull and will do all it will take by fair means of foul to come out ahead. Derryth, with her family connections, is an irresistible temptation in more ways than one.

Cull’s loyalty to the Wolf is ingrained, since the Wolf rescued Cull from a fate worse than death and gave him a life of purpose. Imagine Cull’s reactions when it’s revealed that he is a cog in the Wolf’s long-held plan to exact revenge against Clan Kincaid. He sets out to win the fair lady and his real place in life and get a bit of his own back on his former mentor.

Cull and Derryth are fabulous characters with a wonderful supporting cast.

Grade: B

LOVE TAKES NO PRISONERS
Derryth MacClaren is on the run—having been sent from her castle home to avoid capture by the vicious nobleman known as the Wolf, who has vowed revenge against the Clan Kincaid. When a surprise attack leaves her vulnerable, Derryth ends up in the hands of an enemy warrior who claims her, with the Wolf’s blessing, as his prize. But her captor’s gentle words and touch seduce her heart—and body—completely. . . and when she discovers the tattoo on his arm that proves him to be the legendary, long-believed dead son of the murdered Laird of Kincaid, Derryth knows she must find a way to alter his fate—and her own. . .

Cull has no memory of his family or past—all he knows is the life of a warrior, trained to fight on behalf of the Scottish king. But now that Derryth has informed him of who he really is—Cullen Braewick, the youngest son of the slain laird—he is torn. If Cull exacts revenge against the Wolf, who executed his father, he stands to lose the precious lass who he has come to love. What is he willing to sacrifice for Derryth to keep her safe. . .and in his arms?
