Contemporary Romance published by St. Martin’s Paperbacks 29 May 18

I’m a huge fan of cowboys in romance. So when I thought it was time to read a new author and I came across this title, I figured I couldn’t go wrong. Should I have stuck with my favorite western-writing authors instead?

I’m thinking so. There are no surprises in this book. I do like Tanner, a sexy bull-ridin’ cowboy. He’s been on the top of his game for the last ten years and has just suffered his first major injury while riding Thunder Cat. He needs the best in the business when it comes to therapy so he can get back in the saddle, so to speak. His sister knows all about Lauren Lewis, the one who left Tanner without a word, with a broken heart during their high school days, and who is also now successful in her field. Tanner has held a grudge ever since, so you can imagine what a reunion will be like.

Of course, Lauren had her reasons for the breakup. At first she’s reluctant to take Tanner on, but time in Fiji with the love she left behind? At least that’s what you’d think. However, Lauren goes all professional, despite what her heart and emotions tell her. This is fine to a point, but once she gives in, she goes right back to her ethics, and a teeter totter ride has begun. It takes too much time for her to finally give in and all the see-sawing kept me from really warming up to Lauren. It’s paradise, they don’t even try to really talk to each other to figure out their feelings until it’s nearly too late, so sex is it for quite a while. And it’s Tanner who tries to throw in the towel first, so that cowboy garners high marks from me.

Unfortunately, Tanner’s efforts, the love scenes, and the realizations late in the book can’t make up for those issues. Things are much too predictable and too late for this reader to make this story a more enjoyable read.

But how can Lauren resist the smoldering attraction between her and her old flame. . .and will she be able to live without him?
