Book CoverVeena’s review of Wolf Hunger (SWAT, Book 7) by Paige Tyler
Urban Fantasy published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 05 Dec 17

Seven deep in this series, Paige Tyler delivers a fast-paced, action-packed, solid hit.  Readers, this is one series where you really do need to read the books in order to be able to follow and relate to all the references and to identify who’s who in the growing cast of characters.

As the various members of the pack find mates, the single shifters are by turns envious and fearful.  The last place Max could have expected to run into his “One” would be the police department’s award ceremony. Plus, if that’s not unexpected, she happens to be their boss’ daughter and a wolf shifter to boot. Now doesn’t that make a nice kettle of fish! Readers, you know it’s going to get nicely complicated and make for a great ride, since these are just the opening chapters.

Lana and Max hit it off right away and their chemistry is just amazing. They each have to restrain themselves from jumping the other’s bones on their first date. Her father, however, is not happy about their seeing each other and makes no bones strongly expressing his unhappiness.  Lana smells like a werewolf albeit different from anything Max is familiar with, and, despite all of Max’s probing, doesn’t respond in the positive. Could it be that she doesn’t know? Now her father’s strong objections take on a different light.

If things aren’t complicate enough, Lana’s university roommate is brutally tortured and murdered. It looks like it might be hunters who are searching for and eliminating werewolves. Was it a case of mistaken identity? Max desperately wants to keep Lana safe and alert her to her werewolf status. Clearly changing into a werewolf on the street to convince her that they exist is not the best strategy. All it achieves is Lana running home crying to her parents, determined to stay away from Max.

One of the things I really like about this series is how Ms.Tyler incorporates the traumatic events that cause the shifter genes to activate in her characters.  Max’s story of abuse is especially poignant, particularly when current events force him to relive some of his own back story on a SWAT case that he’s called out to.  His attempts to protect the family, especially the kids, which touched my heart while strengthening Max and freeing him from the guilt and burden that he’s carried for so long.

This is a pivotal story because, while the squad finds out there enemies and traitors within high levels in the police force, they also score some pretty high support of their own.  At the same time the hunters leave the squad with wounds that will be a while healing.  This might actually be my favorite story in the series.  I can’t wait to see how it will evolve from here on out.

Grade: A

Summary:

SHE’S ALL THE WOLF HE’LL EVER NEED…

When SWAT Officer Max Lowry meets Lana Mason, he falls fast and hard. He’s positive she’s The One. And Max’s favorite part? Lana’s a wolf shifter too, so they can skip the awkward reveal and head straight to the happily ever after. There’s just one problem: Lana doesn’t know that she’s a werewolf.

To make matters worse, hunters with intent to kill have tracked Lana to Dallas. Max has to figure out how to keep Lana safe, show her who and what she really is—and just how much she means to him.
