Book CoverVeena’s review of Dawn Study (Study/Chronicles of Ixia, Book 6) by Maria V. Snyder
Fantasy Romance published by MIRA 31 Jan 17

This series has been an incredible journey that I’m happy to have been a part, even if I joined mid-way. The author does a stellar job of narrating the story from the various characters’ view point, giving us a wonderful three-dimensional view of what each character is thinking and planning. This is a great way to bring all the loose threads together, making this a very worthy conclusion to all the adventures and battles the characters have endured.

There is a lot to accomplish, if Yelena and Valek want to prevent war.  They have a short time and a lot to get done. The band comes together and each takes on his or her own role and share of the burden. Since the story is told from everyone’s individual viewpoint, it makes for very interesting reading, and I often had to re-read something that I had missed.

While Valek and Yelena have their own individual tasks to accomplish and do spend some time apart, they are together for the most part, which is a great bonus.  They share their hopes, fears, and love as they dream of a happy, fulfilled peaceful life after the birth of their baby. Valek seems to be really feeling his age, and the author does a superb job of building the word pictures for her readers to relate to this, particularly in the two major fight scenes which Valek wins by the skin of his teeth, knowing full well that he could never duplicate this feat.

This has been a superb series full of intrigue and action and surprises that just keep on coming.  Sad as it is to say goodbye, this book is a fitting conclusion.

Grade: A

Summary:

Despite the odds, Yelena and Valek have forged an irrevocable bond—and a family—that transcends borders. Now, when their two homelands stand on the brink of war, they must fight with magic and cunning to thwart an Ixian plot to invade Sitia.

Yelena seeks to break the hold of the insidious Theobroma that destroys a person’s resistance to magical persuasion. But the Cartel is determined to keep influential citizens and Sitian diplomats in thrall—and Yelena at bay. With every bounty hunter after her, Yelena is forced to make a dangerous deal.

With might and magic, Valek peels back the layers of betrayal surrounding the Commander. At its rotten core lies a powerful magician…and his latest discovery. The fate of all rests upon two unlikely weapons. One may turn the tide. The other could spell the end of everything.
