Not only did her husband cheat on her, openly stealing her self-confidence, but he involved her innocent young sister in his criminal activities. Blackmailed by her boss into working like a slave and facing down the mob when they come calling to collect on her husband’s debt’s life is not very pleasant for her. While Brandon wants her help in exposing and bringing down her boss, he’s also like her white knight sweeping away her trials and troubles.
While Carly might be defeated on the surface, she has quietly been working with a reporter friend to expose her boss’ less-than-stellar activities. Brandon’s plans give her an opportunity to take a much more aggressive stance. Mia and Chase Taggart play an important supporting role in this story, as do the rest of the Taggarts, particularly Ian. For all that Brandon has experienced in life, I expected him to be a lot more jaded, but his belief in Carly’s innocence, even in the face of his brother Drew’s suspicion, is sweet and heart warming. Carly definitely seduces him away from alcohol and his exotic dancer fetish.
There’s a nice touch of suspense and action that adds the right edge to this deeply emotional and romantic story. The twists and turns will keep readers gasping, especially the big reveal at the end that totally blew me away. Lots of loose threads going into Drew’s story. I, for one, can hardly wait to see how these threads all come together into what I imagine will be a thrilling finish.
