Sandy M’s review of For Maggie’s Sake by Lora Leigh
Contemporary Erotic Romance published by St. Martin’s Griffin 13 Dec 16
If ever two people deserve a second chance at love, it’s Joe and Maggie in this short story by Lora Leigh. Both have been betrayed by the one person they thought they could trust forever. Now that betrayal is still coming between them when they should be healing together after all the truths connecting them have been revealed.
It’s been two years since DEA agent Joe Merino and Maggie Chavez broke up, despite the fact they loved each other. Joe is the one who couldn’t commit and he walked away. Maggie met another man who almost made her forget what she lost. But after their wedding the evil truth of her new husband comes out – he’s Joe’s best friend and has married Maggie only to exact his revenge on the man who thinks of him as a brother. Grant is still giving them both hell, despite the fact he’s dead. Also a DEA agent, he was tangled up with a drug cartel, right in the middle of every evil deed perpetrated. He left evidence that Maggie was involved just as much he was, and the agency has been interrogating her for hours with Joe watching from the sidelines.
Over and over again Maggie has declared her innocence. She knows absolutely nothing about Grant’s double life, but no one believes her. Including Joe, which sears her heart once again, believing he knows her better than anyone. Joe does believe her, and arrangements are made for her to be in his custody until the cartel can be brought down. They’ll be looking for Maggie. He’s got her and he’s going to make sure he never lets go again. When these two are cooped up together, the ice begins to melt almost immediately and I’m surprised they made it into each other’s arms for all the steam and sizzle. But make it they do, sharing their intense and raw lovemaking just as before.
They also work out a plan to hopefully bring the cartel down. Of course, before they can get too far, things go a bit wrong and the bad guys get the upper hand. At first I was a bit dissatisfied with what looked like an unbelievable ending, but thank goodness for the twist Ms. Leigh throws in when least expected. A quick and sexy read, this isn’t Ms. Leigh’s best, but it’s definitely worth it to sit down with Joe and Maggie for an afternoon.
