Book CoverKristie J’s review of His by Brenda Rothert
New Adult Romance published by Silver Sky Publishing 28 Jun 16

I’ve said in a number of places and a number of times how much I enjoy this author.  There are a couple of her stories that have bombed for me, but most of them I quite enjoy, so much so that she’s now an auto-buy author.  And, although His has a different “feel” to it than most books I read, I enjoyed it enough to keep Ms. Rothert on my auto-buy list.

In just about all romance books, you have to suspend a great deal of belief.  After all, they are written by women, so most of the heroes are the ideal of a hero, not a ‘real guy’ at all, for the most part.  I have no problems with this one bit.  But in the case of His, our hero, Andrew, is just too good to be true and this story seems more of a cross between Pretty Woman and a fairy tale.

Quinn is in dire straits.  She and her younger sister have been homeless and on the run for four years now.  The reason comes later in the book, so I won’t say why, other than it’s a valid reason.  They are living on the streets of New York, winter is coming, and her young sister is getting sick.  Then something incredible happens.  A strange man comes to Quinn when she’s at her lowest and says if she agrees to spend one night with his boss, then he will pay her $500.  On top of that, she and her sister and their friend Bean spend the night in a hotel and she gets new clothes.

It seems Andrew, the hero and said boss, only wants a physical relationship with women and only one night’s worth before he moves on to the next one.  Quinn very, very reluctantly agrees, and it’s only because her sister is so sick.  But when the night comes, Quinn simply can’t go through with it.  She’s a virgin and just can’t bring herself to have sex with a complete stranger.  And here is where Andrew becomes too good to be true.  He’s okay with there being no sex; he sees how freaked out Quinn becomes.  And not only that, but he can’t forget about her and makes a deal.  He will pay her $10,000 a month for three months, if she will stay with him, no strings attached.  Of course, he hopes she will have sex with him sometime, but if she doesn’t, well, that doesn’t change things.  They spend time together, without sex, and Andrew turns out to be the total knight in shining armor.  He’s kind of like the Richard Gere character in Pretty Woman, very handsome and very willing to spend any kind of money since he’s quite a rich white-collar kind of guy.

He knows Quinn is in some kind of trouble and he gets a bit frustrated with her at times, due to her stubbornness in not letting him in to her private life at all.  And I’ll confess I also found it a bit frustrating.  Here is this too-good-to-be-true hero who only wants to help her and she won’t let him.  If I have any criticisms, it is with Quinn.  I found her too obstinate.  And Andrew a little too perfect.  But other than those, I quite enjoyed the book.  It was very readable and I finished it in one day.  That’s always a good sign.

Summary:

Quinn
I’d say I’m down on my luck, but that’s an understatement. I’m flat on my ass. Homeless, hungry and in hiding with my little sister at the age of twenty-one, I’ve never been so desperate. I’ve hit rock bottom when I get an offer I can’t refuse. Sell my body to save my sister? There’s nothing I won’t do to keep her safe. I make the rules and I’m not afraid to defend myself if this rich guy crosses the line. But once I see beneath his cold, calculating façade, the lines aren’t so clear anymore.

Andrew
She’s an intoxicating mix of tough and vulnerable I’ve never known before. This homeless woman who fits right into my upper-class world is running from someone powerful, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. But Quinn isn’t meant to be controlled, so I’m forced to choose between owning her and loving her. I’ve finally met my match, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make her truly mine.
