Sandy M’s review of My Tempting Highlander (Highland Hearts, Book 3) by Maeve Greyson
Paranormal Romance published by Loveswept 23 Feb 16
This is my first book by Maeve Greyson, and I was quite happy when I started reading about Ronan – a sexy Highland chieftan who’s cursed and can shift into a wolf. And he has to time travel to present day to find the one woman who can break the curse. All my favorite elements in a paranormal, mixed with a bit of Scottish romance.
I do like Ms. Greyson’s writing. She pulls you in and makes you feel like you’re right there with her characters in Scotland, whether it’s in the past or future. Because this is the third book in the series, there are a lot of characters to keep straight. I think it would be best to start at the beginning just so you’re more familiar with them all. Well, and to enjoy the two previous Scottish heroes.
Ronon has been searching for hundreds of years for the one person who will break the spell a jealous witch placed on him when trying get get even with Ronan’s father. His mother and best friend are also trapped in this spell with him, so finding this woman is always first and foremost in his mind. When he visits McKenna Keep, it’s Granny Sinclair and her riddles that finally gives him hope – the old woman’s granddaughter seems to be his future. But she’s in the 21st century.
Mairi Sinclair likes her conveniences of present day, but she does visit her family in the past once in a while. She has two sisters there who married the aforementioned Scottish heroes. When she meets Ronan, she knows things aren’t adding up, and the more he omits why he’s there for her, the more she has to guard her heart.
I really like Ronan. Mairi has her issues with him, namely his habit of lying to her. I understand that, but her incessant anger goes on far too long for me. Especially when she can’t stay out of Ronan’s bed in the middle of that anger. She gets to the point her attitude of “Let’s get this over with” really got on my nerves. Even at the end when Ronan finally tells her everything – the man has had a lot to deal with over the centuries, for heaven’s sake – she can’t let go of her mad. She should understand Ronon’s plight since she herself has some paranormal abilities and how no one outside the family knows that. It’s a difficult thing for regular folk to get past, so his reasons should sit a bit better with her.
I do like Granny Sinclair a lot. Though I think reading the first two books would help me understand the family line more and why each person is either in the past or the present. I also like Eliza, Mairi’s mentor in the present. The best line in the book is when she tells Ronan to woo his love until one of them is dead. Best advice ever. The rest of the characters, aside from Ronan’s mother and best friend (who will be featured in the next book in the series, along with Mairi’s twin sister, Lilia) are a muddle for me, not having read their stories. It’s just too difficult to keep everything about them in mind when you haven’t gotten to know them beforehand. I do wish there had been a bit more shapeshifting going on. That’s another element I love in romance and I like a lot of it.
All in all, a good story even despite Mairi’s attitude. I’d like to read the first two books and hopefully some day I’ll get the chance. If you like those Scottish heroes and the paranormal, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
Summary:
Cursed to live forever with neither wife nor child, Ronan Sutherland has watched all he cherishes turn to dust—more than once. For hundreds of years, he’s been trapped behind the mists of Loch Ness, hoping to identify the one woman who is prophesied to break the spell. Now, at last, the fates have aligned, and he’s being sent into the future to fetch her. After a single glimpse, Ronan knows he’s been waiting all his life for this passionate woman.
Unlike her time-traveling sisters, Mairi Sinclair is perfectly content to remain in the present. As a hospital nurse in Edinburgh, she cherishes the opportunity to put her gift of healing powers to good use. But everything changes the morning a mysterious wolf darts in front of her car. Touching the wounded creature’s tawny coat, a tingle surges through her. Yet when she returns with aid, Mairi is shocked to find instead a man with broad shoulders and fire in his eyes—a man who tempts her to unleash the animal within.
