C2’s review of The Legend of Lyon Redmond (Pennyroyal Green, Book 11) by Julie Anne Long
Historical Romance published by Avon 29 Sep 15
O hai, Pond Visitor! Me?? I’m here allll the time. ALL THE TIME! *innocent look* It isn’t my fault if you haven’t noticed me. I was right over there – I swears!!! Anyhoo…let’s do this!
You know how it is, faithful reader, that faint sense of anxiety…even dread, maybe…when you’re about to start reading a long-awaited book in a series. The book all the other books have been leading up to…dropping hints, tantalizing us, showing little glimpses of potential awesomeness. And then finally it’s here! The story we’ve been waiting for. We know it could be fabulous (for example: Nalini Singh’s Heart of Obsidian) or it could go horribly wrong (for example: *ahem*). So how did the most recent installment of the Pennyroyal Green series go? Keep reading!
Fear not! I’m here to tell you that The Legend of Lyon Redmond is an excellent entry into Ms. Long’s Pennyroyal Green series. We finally find out what happened that caused Lyon to leave England and begin his secret life. We even find out a bit more about what he was doing all those years. (Truthfully, I would have enjoyed seeing more of his adventures, but that would have distracted from the romance, I suppose.) We’ve had glimpses into Olivia’s life over the course of the series, but she’s been pretty mysterious overall. We get to see a bit of why that is, too.
We get a lot of their backstory – more than I expected, actually. That isn’t a complaint, but it is a bit surprising. Still, it makes sense…for all that we’ve seen these characters in dribs and drabs and through the eyes of others, we don’t really know them. So we have to get to know them and get to know their story. All of their story.
I won’t detail how they fell in love or why they broke up or how their reunion goes – I don’t like spoiler-ish reviews and a lot of you have probably already read the book and know first-hand (sorry I’m so slow, Sybs!). Just let me say I am completely satisfied with the story and I wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out until the very end. I mean, yes, they are going to end up together (spoiler??), but the how isn’t as obvious as is sometimes seen in romances. A compliment, to be sure!
Also bonus points for a very cool epilogue! Talk about something completely different! Nicely played, Ms. Long. I enjoyed! I hope we see more of the same at some point, as your schedule allows.
The Pennyroyal Green series has been one of my favorites since the very beginning. It is consistent in feel and quality and ever so entertaining. If you are looking for a solid historical series, give this one a try (from the beginning, please…otherwise I will weep).
So, can two broken hearts come together and trust their feelings after years apart? Or will bitterness and mistrust keep them from finding happiness? I wonder…
