Book CoverVeena’s review of Reckless in Pink (Emperors of London, Book 4) by Lynn Connolly
Historical Romance published by Lyrical Press 08 Dec 15

The plot thickens as we meet our first Empress and Bonnie Prince Charlie, who, alas, is not so bonnie anymore. When Claudia and Dominic get embroiled in the affairs of the young pretender, will the emperors once again be able to stand against the Dankworths and keep their own safe?

Every book so far has focused on the illegitimate or maybe legitimate children of the exiled James Stuart and this one is no different. The intrigue grows further apace as Prince Charles comes to England to make a bid for recognition. The emperors are embroiled through Claudia’s inheritance of a house in a questionable neighborhood. When Dominic comes to her rescue while he is on a mission to find the bonnie prince, it lands them both in danger, even as it gets their hearts pumping for each other.

Dominic is hiding secrets that stand in the way of him pursuing a legitimate relationship with Claudia. She, however, has no qualms about recruiting her extended family to go after what her heart desires, which is Dominic on his knees offering love and marriage. She is a refreshing young woman, definitely rare for her times, who knows exactly what she wants, which is to wed Dominic’s, only on the condition that he loves her.

There are people on the opposite side who suspect that Dominic may be more than whom he appears to be, which places both him and Claudia in the gun sights of the enemy. Clearly Dominic is an emperor in all but name, and it’s cute when Claudia tries to morph his name into an emperor. Unfortunately, it’s Claudia who’s shot, but since it lands her in Dominic’s home and in his bed, she’s okay with it, even as her family protests.  I really enjoyed how the story plays itself out.

Julius is his usual gorgeous self, and we learn a little more about his deceased wife and their relationship. He’s going to need a strong woman to tame him and win his heart and I can’t wait for that one.

We also get to see more of Alconbury, Dankworth’s heir, who really impresses me against my will. I hope the author plans to give him a story and a chance to redeem himself by giving him a worthy romantic opportunity.

I am pleased to hear that there are many more books in this series to come, because I am fascinated with all the emperors and I’ve just discovered that one of them might not be so straight and narrow. Is there perchance a threesome in the future in this series?

Grade: B+

Summary:

Like the royals for whom they were named, the Emperors of London family have enemies and rivals of their own…

As a soldier for the Crown, Dominic is charged with locating the Young Pretender to the British throne so he can be tried as a traitor. But his mission is altered when he meets Claudia Shaw, an intriguing young woman who has inherited a house of ill repute. In an effort to protect Claudia from her own recklessness, Dominic finds himself allowing the Pretender to slip away…

Claudia is one of the Emperors of London, but her family despairs of her impetuous behavior. And try as he might, the disciplined Dominic cannot quite curb her excesses. In fact, she soon drags him into her adventures—and toward a passion neither can resist. But when a deadly secret comes to light that puts their lives, and their love, at risk, Claudia won’t allow Dominic to sacrifice himself. She is determined to have him—even if it means getting the Young Pretender out of the way herself.
