Veena’s review of Cold Hearts (Secrets and Lies, Book 2) by Sharon Sala
Romantic Suspense published by Mira 25 Aug 15

The second book in the series picks up from where the first one leaves off to deliver a pulse-pounding suspense story teamed with yet another second chance at romance. Lissa and Mack, once childhood sweethearts, are brought together at the scene of a grisly murder, where her car was used as the instrument to kill his father. What is the trigger that’s led to a second murder in so many weeks and Sheriff Trey’s mother is possibly the next person who is the cross hairs of a killer. Make sure you have the time to read the book cover to cover, because I assure you won’t want to put it down until it’s done.

To further complicate the situation, Lissa is being stalked by a sexual predator who attacks her in her home. Sheriff Trey Jakes has his hands full trying to keep Lissa safe and eliminate any crossover between the attacks on her and the most recent murder in his town. Plus, his mother might be a material witness to the murders, especially since it seems she’s been remembering murky details of the long-ago accident and journaling her dreams.

The only good thing to come from this situation is that Mack comes to Lissa’s rescue. He offers her sanctuary in his father’s home and as she helps him navigate through his grief and all the things necessary to handle his father’s demise, the intervening years are wiped away and before they know it they are repairing their old romance and finding new footing.

*************** Spoiler Alert***********************

I think the author has done a terrific job with the secondary character of the handyman and his brother. While I was not necessarily surprised by the outcome, the characters are so superbly drawn that I doubted my conclusions several times through the reading.

Lissa and Mack find their happy ending, but the book ends on an extremely sad note. I had hoped, since the first book, that this situation would not come to pass. I cannot wait till the third book to find out who the murderer is and what he has to hide that has brought him out of hiding thirty years later.

If you enjoy romantic thrillers, then this one is definitely an excellent read. I would advise that you to pick up the series from the beginning, even if each book stands on its own.

Grade: A

Summary:

There’s only one way to keep secrets buried…

If only it had been something else that brought Lissa Sherman and Mack Jackson back in touch after so many years. Something—anything—other than the murder of Mack’s father. Even worse, Lissa’s car had been used as the murder weapon.

Thirty-five years ago, four friends went out joyriding and ended up in a terrible accident that left one dead and the others with no memory of that awful night. Now two more people, including Mack’s father, have been murdered, and if the lone survivor knows why they’re being targeted, she’s not talking.

Even as Lissa and Mack find themselves drawn together in the midst of tragedy, the mystery deepens when someone comes after Lissa, too. Is the danger to her tied to the other deaths, or are two killers at work in town? Now Mack has to fight an unknown attacker as well as his feelings for Lissa, but it may be that he can’t win either battle.
