Veena’s review of Hot Point (Firehawks, Book 10) by M.L. Buchman
Contemporary Romance published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 04 Aug 15

I have mixed emotions how this book seems to span two distinct stories under one cover. I suppose I should just think of it as a bonus featuring a great couple and two exciting stories, but…

Anyhow, Vern and Denise make a great couple with their romance kicking off almost from the beginning, with the relationship getting hotter and spicier as the story progresses. The thrills and chills add a nice element to make this an eminently readable story.

Vern is an experienced helicopter pilot, having flown in the coast guard and then with the fire crews, and yet he’s humble when he graduates to flying a new Firehawk in the august company of ace pilots Emily Beale and Jeannie Clark.  It’s cute how his competitive spirit has him continually try to improve his timing to match the two experienced pilots. Never fear, Vern will have plenty of opportunity to prove his flying skills, despite the fact that he starts off on the bad side of ace mechanic Denise when he brings in his damaged chopper, albeit after some great flying to prevent further damage. Fortunately, this is the ice breaker that brings him closer to Denise and kick-starts their relationship.

They really are opposites, with him being relaxed and nonchalant for the most part, balancing her intensity. Denise has had a very solitary upbringing by her immensely brilliant father, after she lost her mother in childhood. Shy, she’s never really forged strong relationships with the opposite sex and starts off with Vern expecting the other shoe to drop, but the chemistry between them is off the charts, taking them to from zero to sixty at lightning speed.  I love how he brings out the impulsive side she never knew she had, as their relationship progresses by leaps and bounds under the amused eyes of the entire MHA crew.

There are plenty of adventures to keep the reader invested in the story. First Vern flies into the face of a hidden fire and comes out of it with his mad flying skills and a designated hero by the rest of the MHA team, including Mark and Emily, who, as we all know, have a very high standard.  Then he gets to do a repeat performance when Denise is kidnapped and they’re both sucked into a top-secret operation to save the president of Honduras, where his mad flying skills elicit compliments from Michael, the Delta Force guy, that even Mark and Emily look up to.

This is a well-written story, moves at a great pace, and keeps the reader involved in the flowering of the beautiful relationship between these two, as well as the excitement and adventure to be found outside the bedroom.
