Veena’s review of To Love A King (Court of Anwyn, Book 3) by Shona Husk
Paranormal Romance published by Source Books Casablanca 07 Oct 14

You definitely need to read this series in order, otherwise you’ll be completely lost. Each book is like a building block leading the reader deeper and deeper into the heart of the story. Prince Felan Ap Gwynn has been building his alliances and getting things ready for the day when he will take over the faerie court. Unfortunately for him, his plans on bringing his rightful love to be his queen have taken a giant setback, but he’s not willing to compromise and will stake all on the outcome that he desires…

If you’ve been reading the series so far, the Prince Felan that we meet between the covers of this book is not the polished politician that we’ve met so far. Unwittingly circumstances forced him to abandon his true love in the human world and with the way time moves between the two realms, she had definitely moved on from him by the time he came back.

Jacqueline has finally recovered and is now working in a coffee shop when Felan finds her again. It’s taken her a long time to recover from the wounds that Felan left on her heart and psyche and she’s definitely not receptive to any of his advances. Poor Felan is operating on a very tight frame and he’s determined to win his true love and not settle for dynastic marriage with any other human. It’s very sweet to see this man who is slated to be king of the faerie realm humble himself to court his very human love, doing simple and ordinary things that she desires to show her his heart.

Along the way we meet all the other characters that we’ve met before, who’ve aligned themselves to Felan as they serve and protect not just Felan but also Jacquie. I’m a bit on the fence with some of Felan’s tactics, but I suppose all is fair in love and war, and he was definitely trying to ensure the right outcomes.

I find the interactions between Felan and his mother very sad. The author does a great job at proving that the world of Faerie is definitely very far from the day-to-day normal, emotional world we humans live in, and yet the relationship between Felan and his lady love is definitely very human in emotion and richness. It is heartwarming that Felan’s dying father also realizes and blesses the union happy that his son will have a happier life than he himself had.

It’s going to take a battle before Felan can take his rightful place, even though his father, the current king, endorses his right to rule. His opponents definitely play dirty and it’s touch and go as Jacqueline embraces her destiny and fights for what she wants and needs. I like her character and definitely think she’ll keep Felan centered and prevent him from becoming a cold, unfeeling monarch like his parents before him.

I thought this book would mark the end of the series, but I see from the author’s website that we’re slated to see future books. There did not appear to be any hooks in this last addition, so it’s not clear in what direction and what characters we’ll get to see when we revisit Annwyn.

Grade: B
