Veena’s review of Hard To Forget by Incy Black
Romantic Thriller published by Entangled Ignite 06 Oct 14
Lowry Fisk knows the unit of the British Secret Service for which she works is compromised. but she can’t get anyone to believe her. When she takes matters into her own hands and goes rogue, her attempt to expose the mole fails spectacularly and ends up with her being raped, shot, and dishonorably discharged. If you think this is the story, let me tell you that this is just Chapter One and the pace doesn’t get any slower as the book progresses.
Having finally accepted defeat, Lowry disappears and recreates herself as a successful painter. Unfortunately, her very first art show brings her face to face with her rapist, who escaped justice when her team showed up, as well as her ex-boss Jack who’s assigned the role of a reluctant protector. The only good thing that comes out of all this is that Jack has no choice but to believe her conspiracy theory.
As Jack’s team works in the background to prove Lowry’s innocence in the brutal murder of her friend and art agent, Jack tries to keep her safe. The feelings between both of them are volatile. On the one hand, Lowry is dealing with the physical repercussions of her rape and PTSD, but, on the other hand, she just doesn’t seem to be able to resist Jack, who has his own issues to deal with – namely his hot sexual attraction to her, which is an open secret amongst the service and his family.
As their enemy continues to gain the upper hand and all roads seem to close for them, Jack takes her to his ancestral home and to the bosom of his family. Apparently Jack has a fair amount of healing of his own to do. The interactions between Lowry and Jack are almost like a ping pong match as the rapid fire dialogue flows between them. His family and his team act as a great foil for them.
Since Lowry recognizes her villain right off the bat, the reader knows the bad guy almost from the beginning. However, his right-hand guy, who is the mole in the secret service, is a well-hidden secret until almost the very end. I enjoyed the book and would definitely like to see Jack’s brothers and his teammates find their significant others.
Grade: B
Summary:
A thrilling category romance from Entangled’s Ignite imprint.
A warning ignored…a love denied
Four years ago, Major Jack Ballentyne followed Special Agent Lowry Fisk into a death trap. Fortunately, both of them lived to tell the tale, but when he had Lowry drummed out of the British Intelligence Service for her own safety—and his own peace of mind—he knew she’d never forgive him.
Lowry Fisk knew, she just knew, that the Service had a mole, and it was up to the Assassins, the secret black-ops unit of the Service she and Jack belonged to, to find him. And as the Assassins leader, Jack should have believed her, even though she had little evidence beyond a gut feeling. But when he hadn’t, she’d taken it upon herself to find the traitor—and ended up assaulted, shot, and left for dead. Jack had come to her rescue, but it had been too little, too late. Now all she wants to do is forget the attack, the Service, and the sexy, steely-eyed Major with the power to make her feel weak.
But the mole is on the move, and he’s coming for Lowry to finish what he started. Jack has to get the stubborn, dangerously gorgeous woman to let him back into her life and allow him to protect her—without allowing her to worm her way into his heart.
