This book is six deep in the series, but the first that I’ve read. While there are many references to previous romances, it does not keep me from enjoying Porter’s and Kenzie’s story. Kenzie’s dilemma with the Russian mob adds a nice touch of suspense and keeps the reader engaged. It’s clear from page one that Kenzie needs strong levels of physical pain to deal with her emotional pain, but it is the transformation that Porter effects in offering her the true freedom to be found in submission that makes this story so compelling.
Porter is one of those mouth-watering dominants who focuses on uncovering Kenzie’s submissive core and works through her bratty behavior to help her achieve the emotional freedom to be found in deep submission. It takes a while to get there, and I enjoyed Porter’s creative ways in punishing his sub. It also takes a while to understand the cause of Kenzie’s pain and why she craves physical punishment to find temporary relief. I’ve enjoyed many books in this genre, but this is the first time I’ve realized that these stories are as much psychological as they are physical.
While there is so much focus on the psychological and emotional walls that Kenzie hides behind, the author does not stint on the physical end of the relationship. Overall, a well-written story with all the ingredients necessary to please a reader of this genre.
