Veena’s review of The Best Man For The Job by Lucy King
Contemporary Romance published by Harlequin KISS 01 Jun 14

This is one those books where the excerpt pretty much tells you the story minus any thoughts and emotions that the characters portray. The book has an interesting twist, but, even so, I never did get invested in either the story or the characters.

She’s a workaholic and her drive toward making partner in her current law firm is all consuming. He’s an entrepreneur who’s just sold his business and dabbling with different opportunities for his future. There’s been an underlying attraction between them which they’ve kept pretty well under the wraps since he’s her brother’s best friend. They’ve managed to successfully avoid each other for fifteen years, but, since he’s her brother’s best man, it was inevitable that they meet at the wedding. He’s surprisingly supportive of her family angst and her long dry spell while she’s concentrated on her job at the cost of personal relationships. His offer of support results in a quick, almost furtive, encounter to scratch their mutual itch.

That should have been the end of it since they both have busy, fulfilling lives and are in denial about any sort of relationship, except a mutual friend sends him her way to check up on her when she’s a no-show at a party. When he sees her looking pulled down and totally unlike herself, he ends up taking her to the emergency room where they’re in for a surprise. Talk about a complication that they can’t hide from.

I have to admit that I am always amused and somewhat disbelieving how these sophisticated men about town get caught in the pregnancy trap that they’ve successfully avoided all their lives. Nature taking a hand or something. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Anyhow, back to our protagonists and how they deal with the cards dealt to them.

You’ll have to read the book to find out if they can they find common ground and a solution to their mutual satisfaction. Plus, he’s her brother’s best friend? That’s a complication in itself that needs to be dealt with in order to prevent bloodshed.

Grade: C

Summary:

The wedding guest from her past…

For Celia Forrester, Marcus Black—her brother’s best friend—was always totally off-limits. Especially after The Night That Nearly Happened. It was years ago, but Celia remembers it for all the worst reasons! But now, Marcus is back in the picture—he’s the best man at her brother’s wedding and more gorgeous than ever!

It’s all kinds of inappropriate, but giving in to temptation looks like the best way for Celia to get Marcus out of her system. But their one night comes with consequences. And this time, it won’t be fifteen years until they have to face them…but nine months!
