Veena’s review of If The Viscount Falls (Dukes Men Book 4) by Sabrina Jeffries
Historical Romance published by Pocket Books 27 Jan 15
I have been a long-time fan of Ms. Jeffries’ writing, but this series, for some reason, has just not hit the right spot for me. I almost abandoned the series mid-way but was glad not to have done so, because I quite enjoyed the previous story and Dominick’s character appealed to me from the get-go. Unfortunately…
Dominick Manton is a strong-principled character who walked away from his fiancé, family, and his place in society for his principles and for the love of his half siblings. I thought his story would definitely be over the top, since he had impressed me as hero material, even before we got to this point. He is such a martyr, full of guilt and angst, that I was a loss to find the young idealist man who turned his back on his wealth and position. It’s a good thing he got over himself; otherwise, his happy ending would definitely have been in jeopardy.
I admire Jane for sticking to her guns in many ways and taking her cousin’s side. However, for all her strength, she definitely does not fight for what she wants. I kept feeling that if she fights for Dominick in the same way she fights to save her cousin, perhaps their romance would have taken a different path. It is such a case of mistaken pride on both parts that it leaves me a bit cold, even as they finally worked through the mess to come together.
It’s good to visit with the other characters in the series, but they play such a small supporting role that they truly do not bring a lot to the story. I do see the series will continue with what seem to be two very interesting characters, but for me I think I might just call it a day.
Grade: C
Summary:
The heir presumptive to the Viscount Rathmoor, Dominick Manton once had his heart’s desire within reach—a bright future as a barrister and engagement to Jane Vernon, a wealthy baron’s daughter. Then a shattering betrayal by his vindictive brother George snatched away Dom’s inheritance and his hopes of offering Jane a secure future. Brokenhearted, and attempting to end their engagement without destroying Jane’s reputation, Dom staged a betrayal of his own to convince her that he’s not the husband-to-be that she thought.
Now George is gone and the viscountcy restored to Dom, since his brother’s widow, Nancy—Jane’s cousin and closest confidant—never bore an heir. But when Nancy goes missing, a panicked Jane calls on her former fiancé to track down her cousin. Dom knows the mistakes of the past may be unforgiveable—but now, entangled together in mystery and danger, will they rekindle a passionate longing that was never lost to begin with?
