Veena’s review of Avenger’s Heat (Moon Shifters, Book 6) by Katie Reus
Paranormal Romance published by Signet 04 Feb 14
A teaser was my first introduction to Katie Reus and this series. After the first book, the next few in the series fell through the cracks until this one showed up on my doorstep. Thanks to Berkley, this series is back on my radar screen, and I’ve definitely added the author to my “Likes.”
Erin Flynn is on her first independent assignment as a council enforcer. Pregnant shifters are being kidnapped in New Orleans and there are no apparent clues with regard to whodunit or why. Accompanying her is Noah Campbell, who happens to be the son of the New Orleans alpha. His role is to smooth her path by facilitating diplomatic relations between Erin and the pack.
The reality is a little different, since it’s soon apparent that there are strong undercurrents between Noah and his dad and it’s up to Erin to play mediator. Added to the volatile mix is Noah himself, who’s more aggressive than normal, since Erin seems to have inadvertently triggered the mating instinct in him. As they start to work the crime, it’s soon apparent that Erin’s past might have crossed paths with her present, which, while it further complicates the situation for the protagonists, clearly makes for a better read.
It’s good old-fashioned detective work coupled with an interesting cast of characters consisting of humans, vampires, Fae, and shape shifters. A horrifying story begins to emerge as Erin and Noah work the clues and race against the clock to save the kidnapped females. The “why” behind the crime is pretty startling, as the author does a great job of leveraging the traits of her paranormal protagonists to create an extraordinary story.
Erin is a kick-ass, take-no-prisoners heroine. I like strong female protagonists and she is definitely one of my favorites. She’s had a hard path and certainly deserves the best, and Noah definitely fits the bill. He’s aggressive but caring and compassionate. They make a great couple. He definitely got my vote with how he handles her confession with regard to what’s holding her back from giving in to her feelings.
It really sounds like a lot more trouble is coming the way of the Armstrong clan. I can’t wait to read some of the forthcoming books in the series. The excerpt for the next one makes it sound pretty spine chilling. I already have goose bumps and can’t wait for it to get here.
Grade: B
