Veena’s review of Beyond Solitude (Beyond, Book 4.5) by Kit Rocha
Dystopian Erotic Romance published by Amazon Digital 30 Apr 14

I stumbled upon Kit Rocha and this series by accident. I wasn’t sure what to make of this brave new dystopian world that the author has created at first, but slowly and surely the series has grown on me. This short novella takes us back into Sector Four and rubs in how it is different from the other sectors in the importance and equality that they grant to their women. Dallas and Lex have a leadership style that brings out the best in their people, allowing them to shine on their own merits. In addition to the camaraderie, there’s the fighting and sexual orgies that keep things interesting and continuously simmering.

Mia is from Sector Two, where girls are trained to be perfect companions to patrons who can afford to pay for their services. She escapes from her life in servitude and her horrible patron and makes her way to Lex, where she’s put to work to earn her keep. She’s smart and well educated, but due to her training as a companion, she’s had to hide her true skills under a submissive exterior. For the first time she relishes in the freedom to be herself.

Derek is grumpy at being desk bound after a motorcycle accident. The last thing he wants is a beautiful assistant in his office emphasizing his weakness and calling to his other senses. But underneath his crusty exterior, he’s a softy and a nurturer in how he first gets Mia a hair dryer and a heater and then helps retrieve and repair her precious stolen locket. Derek has his own share of baggage in his past. Their journey, as they progress from an affair to true romance, is multi-layered. I guess they both had some growing and groveling to do.

A great filler which takes us into the inside of the O’Kane world and it’s multi-hued, multi-layered relationships.

Grade: B

Summary:

Mia risked everything to walk away from a gilded cage in Sector Two, but grasping at freedom was only her first trial. With no protection in the sectors, every day is a struggle to stay alive. Her best hope now is a job working for the most dangerous gang in Sector Four–the O’Kanes.

When a motorcycle accident leaves Derek Ford riding a desk at the O’Kane compound, the last thing he needs is a sexy new assistant upending his office and his life. Especially someone like Mia, who greets his growls and commands with smiles and a fierce independence.

The friction between them generates an undeniable heat, and Mia’s stubborn refusal to let life beat her down stirs Ford’s darkest protective instincts. He has the power to take care of her, protect her not only from discomfort but from threats of her past…but first he’d have to claim her.
