Veena’s review of Heated (Most Wanted, Book 2) by J. Kenner
Erotic Romance published by Bantam Books 03 Jun 14

From the starting page J. Kenner baits the hook and reels the reader into this story as surely as Sloane appears to hook Tyler – or is it vice versa? Sloane is a police officer on leave searching for her CI’s sister, an exotic dancer who’s disappeared without a trace from a club owned by Tyler and his partners. Despite the fact that these guys are members of Chicago’s business elite and publicly feted, Sloane’s gut and her inside track through the FBI tells her that these guys are dirty and she’s just the gal to prove it.

Despite Sloane’s gut, she falls and falls fast in sexual thrall to Tyler. While it is part of her plan to hook him with her charms to get close and personal so that she would have an opportunity to investigate what hides behind his public persona, she never expected the tables to be turned so thoroughly on her. She’s devastated when she overhears a conversation between Tyler and his two partners to find that he’s well aware she’s a police woman, albeit with no jurisdiction in Chicago.

In a charming way, Tyler sets out to prove that her gut is wrong. He takes her to see his childhood home, which has been turned into a home for women that he and his partners rescued from a sex trafficking ring by posing as buyers. She gets open access to all the dancers at the club where all indications are that he has nothing to do with the disappearance of her friend’s sister, who apparently quit and left to go to Las Vegas. She sees the soft and sexy man, but the facts are still not adding up for her and her gut is still churning double time.

Is there a happy ending in store for Sloane and Tyler? His friends definitely wish it for him, since he’s apparently a different person around her. Is he really on the up and up, because Sloane needs that one thing more than anything else in order to survive as a person and rise above the darkness of her own troubled past.

This is a well-developed, fast-moving story with the right blend of mystery, suspense, sexual tension, and romance. Each of the partners has a dark and interesting past before they came together and bonded, almost like the three Musketeers. Cole’s story promises to be the darkest and most hard core yet. I can hardly wait to read it.

Grade: B

Summary:

I know better than to trust him, that I should never risk my heart.
But fierce passion comes at a high price.

I grew up believing in right and wrong, good and evil, black and white—that there were some boundaries that could never be crossed. And then I met Tyler Sharp.

Bold, charming, and dangerously sexy, Tyler always gets what he wants. But his smile can be deceiving, his dealings sordid, his ambitions ruthless. I thought I was the one woman strong enough to resist him, but our need for each other is too urgent to deny.

One look and I’m in trouble. One touch and I’m hooked. One night and I’m his. And once I fall, there’s no going back
