Veena’s review of Risk Taker (Shadow Warriors, Book 3) by Lindsay McKenna
Military Romance published by Harlequin Romantic Suspense 04 Feb 14

She’s a kick-ass pilot who takes insane chances to rescue wounded service men in the Afghani war zone. Being a part of SEAL Team Six, risk is his middle name. Even so, they might have just been ships that pass in the night. Except….

Sarah Benson is a superb pilot. She is one of the few women officers stationed in a war zone, which does not make her popular with her fellow male colleagues. They go out of their way to make each day as difficult for her as possible, including her commanding officer. She ignores these irritants as she celebrates each wounded serviceman she’s able to save, even if she sometimes has to pretend to misunderstand direct orders from her commanding officer to the contrary.

Ethan is first attracted by her beauty and then by her bravery in flying in to complete an impossible rescue of one of his teammates. Chance puts him in the place of a rescuer when Sarah is attacked on the base. Gratitude swiftly morphs into something more, especially as Evan woos her with his poetry that he composes in her honor. He’s one of the first people to see through her outer layers to the tender heart at the center.

There are, however, rules and restrictions that prevent them from becoming friends, let alone lovers, but Evan is a Navy SEAL skilled at getting in and out of tight corners. But even he is temporarily stymied when he comes up against the walls that her difficult childhood have created. But he mounts a careful campaign and makes huge inroads. He’s a protector at heart, determined to enclose Sarah in the mantle of his protection and has no qualms about recruiting his entire team and commanding officer to make life better for Sarah. The author paints a very realistic picture of the camaraderie and closeness that exists between the team members. It makes you think of the three musketeers with their slogan “All for one, one for all.”

My biggest pet peeve with this book is the fact that there’s a second one to follow. The story ends on a happy note, though a bit abruptly. I am definitely not a fan of the new trend with multi-part series.

Grade: B

Summary:

In the mountains of Afghanistan, her daring rescues have made Medevac pilot Sarah Benson a legend. She loves taking her helicopter where others fear to fly—the danger, the adrenaline…and the distraction from thinking about her own hurt heart.

U.S. Navy SEAL Ethan Quinn is man enough to prize Sarah’s valor as well as her beauty. But his efforts to reach his beautiful colleague cannot pierce her armor. Can he prove that it’s possible to find love in a war zone?
