I didn’t realize that this is the tenth book in an ongoing series, but fortunately I was able to piece together enough of the backstory to not miss not having read the earlier books in the series.
Our hero Miles is much loved and protected by the McCloud clan like a favorite younger brother. He seems to have been subjected to mind altering drugs in previous books that have left him with strong mind control powers. In addition, they seem to have left him with strong erotic dreams that he can’t seem to escape, no matter how hard he tries to obliterate them with strong, physical exercise. He’s managed to build a vault behind which he can encase his mind such that no one is able to penetrate his inner core.
He’s amazed and horrified that Lara Kirk, who is the star of his erotic dreams, is alive and possibly still a prisoner of the group that he took on and escaped in the previous book. He realizes that she’s able to breach the walls of his vault because he used her as part of the encryption key.
Our Lara is a strong heroine. She has been able to hold out even under the strong drugs and torture that she’s been subjected to but has almost given up hope when it seems that her cries for help are answered by the white knight who protects her behind high walls that her mind escapes to under torture.
Miles mounts his rescue operation aided and abetted by the McClouds and is able to free Lara. However, freedom is short lived. Suddenly he and his friends become the subject of an intense manhunt, along with psychic warfare, in an attempt by Lara’s former captors to re-capture her.
This is a high intensity, action-adventure story with strong psychic overtones. I do have to admit that my credulity was stretched a bit, but, all in all, I totally enjoyed the book.
