Book CoverVeena’s review of The Silver Chain (Unbreakable Trilogy, Book 1)by Primula Bond
Erotic Romance published by Mischief 04 Jul 13

Riding the tide of the momentum created by Fifty Shades of Grey and The Cross Fire Series comes  the Unbreakable Trilogy by author Primula Bond as a brand new entrant on this stage.

Gustav Levi, the billionaire owner of the Gustav Gallery in London, is rich and urbane. He has his own demons from his past that have taught him to value control. He is not a sexual dominant in the sense that we have learned about domination from the fiction that is prevalent on the book scene today, but is pretty controlling all the same.

Serena Folkes has a dark and tortured past that she is trying to run away from.  She definitely has money and assets but wants to make her mark on the art scene by sharing the world she sees through the lens of her camera.  On Halloween night in search of pictures that will help her create that unbeatable portfolio, she literally runs into Gustav Levi. Deeply attracted to him from the first glance after some quick and witty repartee, she accepts the offer of a drink from him. Abruptly forced to leave his company  she leaves behind her beloved cameras, giving them both an excuse to reconnect.

Their next meeting is on his terms as he offers to help her make her entrée on the art scene by leveraging his connections and gallery in return for sexual favors. Serena agrees and he binds her wrist with a locked silver bracelet and uses a chain that he can hook on the bracelet to control her.

As both their pasts unfold and they begin to forge their connection, taking some steps forward and other steps backward, they being to heal each other, though that is not apparent as you read the book until almost the end of the book. There is an interesting twist at the end, not entirely unexpected if you pay attention to the clues that are dropped along the way. It will be interesting to see the story unfold in the subsequent books.

The author is a first-time read for me. Shades of Grey was my introduction to the genre, which I thoroughly enjoyed as evidenced by my original review of the series on this site. I don’t know if I have become jaded with the genre now that there’s so much  similar fiction out there.   For me, the book does not deliver on the potential that is there.  There are inconsistencies throughout the book which I find jarring, though there are also some really cute, funny, and even tender moments.

Grade: C

Summary:

One dark evening in London, photographer Serena Folkes is indulging her impulsive side with a night-time shoot. But someone is watching her – mysterious entrepreneur Gustav Levi. Serena doesn’t know it yet, but this handsome stranger will change her life forever…

Serena is fascinated by Gustav, the enigmatic owner of the Levi Gallery, and she soon feels an irresistible pull of attraction. The interest is mutual, and Gustav promises to launch Serena’s photographic career at his gallery, but only if Serena agrees to become his exclusive companion.

To mark their agreement, Gustav gives Serena a bracelet to wear at all times. Attached to it is a silver chain of which he is the keeper. With the chain Gustav controls Serena physically and symbolically – a sign that she is under his power.

As their passionate relationship intensifies, Gustav’s hold on the silver chain grows stronger. But will Gustav’s dark past tear them apart?
