Sandy M’s review of Copy That by HelenKay Dimon
Romantic Suspense published by Harlequin Intrigue 7 Aug 12

In that I’ve just recently discovered HelenKay Dimon books, I think I’ve been missing some great reads. Romantic suspense has never been so…well, suspenseful. This book packs a punch from the beginning, and that’s including the strong heroines and more-than-sexy heroes. About three-quarters of the way through, I was sorry that the hero’s brother’s story is also being told, instead of giving him his own book. I would have loved a second book about these Hill brothers.

Copy that.

Meredith has been waiting for her frequently absent and elusive landlord. When she finally hears stirrings in the apartment below, she heads down to talk to the man. What she gets instead is an intruder, who has now set his sights on her. But this bozo gets more than he bargained for when he goes after our heroine. While she can’t give as good as she gets, Meredith still gets some good licks in before Garrett Hill intercedes and takes the trespasser down. But wait. That’s not Garrett. Is it?

Taking a breather after a rough assignment with the Border Patrol, Jeremy Hill decides to visit his brother, especially since they haven’t been in contact for a while. Jeremy’s a little worried. But finding a woman under attack in Garrett’s home isn’t what he was expecting. Nor was he expecting the workover she’s giving the bastard. His admiration jumps even higher when Meredith gives Jeremy himself a hard time too. There’s no time for this, though; they need to be on the move before all the commotion brings the police down on top of them. Especially after the explosion.

From that point on, Jeremy and Meredith, along with Garrett, his fiance and team, are on the run from safe house to safe house, trying to say one step ahead of those gunning for them. All discussions center around the fact that the enemy is after Garrett, but after they’re found at a place that no one should know about, Jeremy has to expand his thinking to figure out who their mole is and what the hell is going to happen next.

All of this is difficult to do when it’s now Meredith he wants to protect first. When did that happen? The woman has burrowed so far beneath his skin he has no idea how he’ll walk away when everything is said and done. And he’ll have to walk away. What woman would want to live his life? Especially one with Meredith’s past of violence. But even that plan goes by the wayside when he has her in his arms and in his bed. When Jeremy finally figures out who the culprit is, he puts a new plan in motion, one to force the traitor out into the open. But neglecting to include Meredith is a huge mistake.

What emotional scenes those are when the world explodes again and Meredith thinks she’s lost everything. Jeremy should hide when she finds out what he’s done, but I couldn’t decide whether he’s crazy for facing her too soon or courageous for taking her wrath like a man. Either way, these are some of the best interactions in the book. Even those with Garrett and Sara, who also come to a turning point in their relationship during the most dangerous of times. These two brothers are the best at what they do, and it’s a good thing for them they know how to learn their lessons when it comes to their women.

I’m now a bona fide HelenKay Dimon fan. She keeps you guessing, keeps you hot under the collar, keeps you on the edge of your seat – all in less than 250 pages. There’s not many authors who can do that successfully time after time. I’m looking forward to whatever it is she’s got coming up next. Doesn’t matter what it is, I know it will keep me turning the pages till there ain’t no more.
