Ash’s review of Burning Skies (World of Ascension, Book 2) by Caris Roane
Paranormal Romance published by St. Martin’s Paperbacks 26 Apr 11
For some reason, even though I didn’t like the first book in this series at all, I’ve really been looking forward to reading Burning Skies. Happily for me, it turned out to be far better than I expected.
I was interested right away with Marcus and Havily when we met them in Ascension. Neither Marcus or Havily want this relationship to go beyond the physical, even though they are going through the mating bond (which happens to have its own nifty word, but I can’t remember it, so I’ll just call it a mating bond). At times I did get quiet tired of hearing them, especially Havily, list the reasons why they can’t be together. Also, the conflict between them probably goes on longer than it needs to, but for this book the plot is enjoyable and I’m able to look past the romance-related bits I didn’t like. Marcus is one of my favorite warriors and he lives up to what I want from him. Havily does as well. After Allison in the first book, I’m ready for a heroine who isn’t the picture-perfect person.
The plot points that bother me with the first book, such as their weird government rules, aren’t so bad and I don’t think I rolled my eyes more than once or twice. Everything just makes more sense in Burning Skies and I find myself wanting to know more. The secondary characters, good and bad, have more substance. I’m starting to care about what happens to everyone (mostly).
As for what I really don’t like, well, there actually isn’t a lot. The biggest thing, which always has me shaking my head and going WTF, is that every time they get aroused, the parts on their back that their wings emerge from start to…leak fluid. It’s not even a big thing in itself, but I hate every time I read that. It is apparently a highly sensitive area and I really don’t want to think about their backs dripping. Other than that interesting fact, my only complaint is what we see of the next couple (I assume they are up next) makes me worry for their book. It’s another couple who doesn’t want to be together, and I already don’t like the heroine.
All in all, I liked Burning Skies and I want to read the next one. I hope this series continues to get better, and I’ve learned not to judge a series by the first book.
Grade: B+
