Spooktacular: Deborah Cooke Wants to be a Princess in Drag(on)!

October 31, 2007

pink_princess.jpgFor Halloween, I want to be a...

Doesn't everyone? Think of the perks - the pointy hat with the veil on the end (haven't you always wanted one of those?); the floaty dresses made of satin and velvet and brocade; staff to schlep the dry cleaning. A turreted castle with every luxury at your fingertip. Legions of princes doing the Entry Interview with Dad to get to court you - as well as the occasional pauper with aspirations.

And a dragon.

Not on your list? Well, dragons were always on mine. I've always wanted a lean mean fighting machine of my own, a fabulous fabled beast that looked jewelled in the candlelight. Who wouldn't want a man who could turn in on when he wanted to, one who kept a golden treasure hoard of his very own, one always ready to rip out throats in defense of his lady love.

golddragon.jpgWho had to be - if you check your fairy tales - a princess, a virgin or a damsel-in-distress. I'm not much for being in distress and we won't even talk about the other option. So, since I want a dragon of my own, a princess I'll have to be.

I've always been fascinated with dragons and now I understand why I always wanted to dress as a princess at Halloween. It was my favourite costume - my mother and I routinely argued over a princess's needs for boots, a hat and mitts, maybe (on snowy Halloweens) a jacket under her flowing gossamer gown. I knew that such things, although warm, would trash the ethereal princess look, but never won the argument. (Being six years old bites.)

kiss-of-fire-cover.jpgMaybe that's why I don't have a dragon of my own yet. They must be picky, these dangerous dudes who breathe fire and have a taste for maidens. They must be worth the trouble, despite their tempers and their inevitable damage to the upholstery. So, I've created a world of dragons of my very own in a new series of fantasy romances called Dragonfire.

They're sexy hunks, these shape shifting dragon dudes, and I'm having a lot of fun telling their stories. You can meet Quinn, the first one of my Pyr dragon warriors, in February '08 in KISS OF FIRE.

Even better, add a comment here and you can win the drawing for an Advance Reading Copy of KISS OF FIRE! They look like this.

Just peeked at your site and your dragon shifter sounds yummy.

  6. kris on October 31st, 2007 12:53 pm

Sounds great, cannot wait to read it. Your site looks great.

My girls always want to be princesses and that is fine with me. It is less dress up clothes i have to buy.

  7. Amy S. on October 31st, 2007 12:53 pm

    Kiss of Fire sounds great!

  8. Meljean on October 31st, 2007 1:02 pm

Don't mind me. I'm just stroking that cover again. Purty, purty stuff. And I agree, the series sounds great.

Me, I wanted to be a princess dragon superhero. Alas.

  9. Carol W. on October 31st, 2007 1:15 pm

This sounds so exciting. I can not wait to get it and read it.

  10. Deirdre T on October 31st, 2007 1:18 pm

I always wanted a Dragon as a friend, not sure if I wanted one as a lover...

  11. Sybil on October 31st, 2007 1:27 pm

I think that is one of the BEST COVERS evah. And I am not a cover ho like some...

  12. Stacia Helpman on October 31st, 2007 1:28 pm

I just love this cover for this book. It's great. I always enjoy reading about dragons as well - especially of the sexy variety.

  13. Kerry on October 31st, 2007 1:47 pm

I have to admit I always preferred the idea of being a dragon to being a princess. Love the book cover.

  14. Deborah on October 31st, 2007 2:52 pm

Oh, Deirdre, they're only dragons when they fight. Otherwise, they're MEN -- which works for me in a big way.

So, Sybil, who's the kid? My princess dresses came out of the dressup box and were never that fab - plus I had short short hair as a kid.

Deborah, the innocent bystander on this blog

  15. Pam P on October 31st, 2007 2:57 pm

I agree, fantastic cover. Can't wait to read it, Deborah. I love all kinds of paranormal creatures, but especially dragons. They can be arrogant and self-centered, but just need some tender stroking to give you their undivided attention, lol.

  16. Carol G on October 31st, 2007 3:09 pm

I much prefer the dragons of fiction (The Obsidian Trilogy, the Pern series, and several others) rather than the folklore ones--after all magical and/or thread killing dragons are much more interesting than those that just want to eat maidens!

  17. cathy M on October 31st, 2007 3:11 pm

Great excerpt on her website, too. Love paranormals, and the dragon warrior storyline definitely has me interested in reading more.

  18. Darla on October 31st, 2007 4:14 pm

I would soooo love to win a copy of this book! I've read all her older paranormals and loved them all!

  19. Christine on October 31st, 2007 4:48 pm

This series looks fabulous but I wonder why doesn't the princess ever get to be the dragon... why is it one or the other?

  20. Holly on October 31st, 2007 5:49 pm

I really think the cover gods smiled down upon you. Luurve that cover.

Me? I never wanted to be a princess. All those dresses and cold jewelry? *shudder* I wanted to be She-Ra (or one of her counterparts). She got a flying horse and a sword. Yeah-baby. :P

  21. Christine on October 31st, 2007 6:37 pm

Did you say dragon warrior??!!? I'll be whatever I have to be to get the attention of a dragon warrior. Name it... and I can be it! :D

*looks up* uh oh. Another Christine.... :o !

  22. Wendy on October 31st, 2007 6:44 pm

  27. Jane A. on October 31st, 2007 8:31 pm

I've been so waiting for this one to come out. Love dragonlore, love fairy princesses and love the cover of this book!

  28. Gwen on October 31st, 2007 8:57 pm

Hello. My name is Gwen and I'm a cover ho.

    ((hello gwen))

I admit to being in love lust with several cover models. Nathan Kamp chief amongst them. I was doing okay resisting the lure of buying a book simply because ol' Kampy was on the cover. I could walk past him in a grocery store or book store and resist looking drooling.

And then it happened. Deborah's Kiss of Fire cover came out. All my good work until then completely wasted. I backslid until I was not at zero, but at -7. I don't know when I'll be able to recover my good sense. I keep hoping that one day I'd run into the cover model responsible for KOF's cover. Hey - I can dream.

Can't you just see that swagger in his walk? ::sigh::

  29. Stacy S on October 31st, 2007 9:19 pm

I've never read a dragon story before. But it does sound good.

  30. Abbey on October 31st, 2007 9:43 pm

    Love the cover!

  31. loonigrrl on October 31st, 2007 10:24 pm

Dragons?!! Yay! I heart dragons! I'll keep my fingers crossed for winning this ARC :)

  32. Danny on November 1st, 2007 3:31 am

I absolutely love dragons. Can't wait to read the story

  33. Melissa K. on November 1st, 2007 7:23 am

    Hi Deborah,
I told you all the reasons why I should win the ARC on your blog. I thought they were very good reasons and I'm bummed I didn't win. Perhaps I'll win here. I sure hope so as I'd love to win and read KISS OF FIRE. It appeals to me greatly.

  34. jacqui on November 1st, 2007 9:43 am

    Can't wait to read it!

  35. Nicole on November 1st, 2007 9:51 am

    Oh I love that cover!

  36. Cherie J on November 1st, 2007 3:39 pm

I love dragon stories! That cover is so awesome. Can't wait to read it!

  37. Sybil on November 3rd, 2007 10:58 am

How sad is it I am sitting going Deborah? Who the hell is deborah? Jesus woman pick a name!

No idea who the kid is, as with most pic things I blame gwen. Although whoever is it I hope the picture is suppose to be on the internets. Yes I have to keep an eye on Gwen.

Since this posted what a week ago and I am just now noticing I really do a good job on that huh?

Hey I even told her yesterday she could post something about putting together the perfect cover model or was it man.

All I know is it involved actors I would assume mostly not dressed. le sigh, the things I put up for others general amusement.
