Is it just me or are there way too many categories in the Romantic Times 2006 Reviewers’ Choice Awards?
Do you need a BRITISH ISLE-SET HISTORICAL ROMANCE and REGENCY-SET HISTORICAL ROMANCE? What the heck is MOST INNOVATIVE HISTORICAL ROMANCE, how is that different than the other historical romance awards.
How are they defining EROTIC FICTION? I would think The Switch would be erotic romance. So would Pink Ice… am I still not getting the term correct?
How many paranormal categories do we need?
Hell I know awards are sort of meaningless anyway but it seems like once you hit a certain number you have gone from meaningless to just a joke. Doesn’t seem far to the authors that are nominated. It screams we want to give as many awards as we can.
Wonder how many of the nominees paid for ads last year?
“Wonder how many of the nominees paid for ads last year?” Well, well, well. We’re skeptical this morning. But it would be interesting to know…
I can tell you for certain that I *didn’t* pay for an ad, and still received a nomination (Best First Historical)…but there are a lot of categories. I can only wonder how long the award ceremony will be.
That seems like alot of categories. What is the purpose? So everyone can win an award. Sheesh.
Good Grief! There seems to be way to many categories there! I got bored and didn’t even finish going through them all. Seems like they want as many books to win as possible there.
Great googley moogley! Where’s the category for best Virgin Widow Romance with A Sheikh Hero? The other categories seem specific enough.
Y’know, I read ~300 books last year, most of them mainstream, many of them 2006 releases. Of all of those books, I’ve read maybe 10; have probably another 15 of them TBR; have heard of maybe another 10. How’d I miss all those other titles? I blog hop, cruise online and bricks & mortar stores, check the coming soon sections of the RT magazine.
hmmmm dont know jmc but I plan to get through all the historical titles and blog about them. Maybe paranormal too.
I agree kristiej, my eyes started to cross.
Seems like it jane.
Good to know Zoe! So there is at least one 😉
Helenk, helenk, helenk I am not cynical I am just drawn that way.
LOL – you know there *are* a ton of categories – but I’ve been to one of RT’s award ceremonies, and it wasn’t terribly long, because they only give out awards to the winning authors actually in attendance at the ceremony.
The one year I attended the convention was in NYC; I won the Best Medieval of 2003 Award for The Crimson Lady and received a very nice plaque at the awards ceremony.
The year after I was nominated for and won the category for Best K.I.S.S. (Knight in Shining Silver) “Historical” Hero for Duncan MacRae from The Sweetest Sin – but I couldn’t attend the ceremony/convention and so didn’t actually get a plaque.
Last year I finalled for Best Medieval but didn’t win. This year I’ve finalled for Best Medieval as well – but won’t know who won in the category until sometime in late March, I think.
Oh – back to the original reason I wanted to post a response here…I’ve never taken an ad out in RT, in all the six years I’ve been published. Avon has taken ads out each month on behalf of that month’s authors (like all on one page) – but almost all the publishers do that.
So as far as I know, the decisions for nominations and/or winners aren’t based on that kind of criteria… 🙂

ahhhh
but that is one more reason it is great to write for Avon *g*
Now if they would just do some more medievals and ANY westerns I would be happy.
My thought as I was scrolling down was, I guess they didn’t want to leave anyone out. Why all the specific historical categories, then “Historical Romance of the Year?” Didn’t all of those romances fit into another category as well?
