Attention and validation… do go give her some
And let me know if she decides I am racist, so I can change my life to fit her idea. Wouldn’t want to upset the applecart and all.
I will of coure be looking for rec’s for horror, inspirational, AA, mysteries, true crime and all other forms of books I don’t seek out so I may satisfy the entire world by reading something that makes EVERYONE a lil happy.
I do draw the line at Danielle Steele. Just saying. Of course this just proves everything is about me.
Wow. I had no idea you were racist. You pig. err. Is there a female version of the pig or is pig all inclusive? Because I usually use it describe men, so it has kind of taken on a male connotation. What is a good female perjorative? Bitch has been reclaimed. I often call my BFF Wench and a half. So maybe I’ll just settle for Wench. Where was I? Oh yes. Where was it that you said you don’t read black authors?
Is equalitarian a word? I thought it was egalitarian?

All I can say is – if refusing to read Danielle Steele makes you some kind of evil, let me join you in your evilness…cause I’m not reading that stuff.
Umm… Sybil, you are aware that I’m a little brown person, aren’t you? You racist whore! how dare you be friends with me!
*sigh* this shit makes my head hurt. Why can’t we all just get along?
Sow. You should call Sybil a sow Jane.
Oh, of course, Fiona. Sow would be right. I grew up in the Midwest. I should know a sow v. boar (I had to google that).
Color me shocked. *speechless*
In all seriousness, pay it no mind. There’s a lot of stuff out there that I don’t read either and it has absolutely nothing to do with anybody’s race whatsoever.
Keishon, back to lurking
I made a POINT not to call you the taboo “R” word.
And I even made you a decal and said you had a right to your preferences. There are many black book sites. The difference is that they identify as such.
But Sybil, I know it’s a leap, but imagine for a moment you were a black romance author. Wouldn’t all these places that say they are about romance but would nevah, evah would read the likes of you or anybody else with your skin tone, piss you off a bit?
Is is really all about the skin? Or is it about what’s in it?
What’s in it isn’t really all that different, you know.
Added: Are y’all saying all black romance writers are like Danielle Steele? Um, this isn’t the case. I don’t know any Steele-ish black writers at all. Black romance writers are pretty much like any other group of romance writers. We’re not somehow inhuman, naturally inferior writers or more stupid than white writers. Amazing concepts to some, but true.
Dang, I thought I could walk this one off but I have to ask why, Monica, did you even have to make a point not to call Sybil a racist? Why bring it up at all? You know the power behind that word. Why not just say this is a reader who has flat out said that she will not read AA romances?
I’m not sure I understand how a reader is to know an author’s skin colour? Am I to know what colour their hair is, whether they are male or female (Harper Lee – okay, it might sound stupid but I always thought it was a man who wrote To Kill A Mockingbird until I saw a recent movie), their religion, their food preferences?
I can’t discriminate against authors because I’m not interested in the author. Let’s not even go into the fact that I can’t see the author. Sure there are author pics on book flaps nowadays but I don’t look for them. I could care less. I’m interested in the romance. Period.
Yes, today there are books with AA covers but if I were to assume that all those books were written by AA would I be right? I hope not. I hope that writer’s can write what is in their hearts and follow their muse where ever it may take them.
Write a great romance and people will want to read it.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountain green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land.
This is just my fave hymn, and always makes me channel nice thoughts, although very nationalistic in it’s theme.
Just thought I’d add some levity to the debate. *g*
LOL
yes hon but it comes back to what the fuck does this have to do with me and why someone feels I or anyone else in the whole world needs to justify their actions to them
I mean fuck I thought I had a huge ego. I have nothing on monica.

I thought I had a huge ego too. But no, apparently it’s safely stocked in the Misses/Junior section.
I realized that I have blogged numerous times that I won’t read contemporaries. I guess I need a button/decal. Am I an Era-ist?
I never said I don’t read black authors at the point I came into the debate, uh a year and a half ago or so, it was if you haven’t read AA romance you are racist.
I had only been reading for about half a year and at that point had never read a black romance author (to my knowledge). All of the huffing and puffing put me off to where if I saw the conversation again I was gonna scream.
Which was/is really the view of many but most people then and now just ingore it cuz there is no winning the debate with monica.
I was so sick and tired of reading how I had to read X or I was Y that I recall putting down a book or two because I felt like I was being given some sort of test I had no chance of passing. And I won’t do crap if I feel like I am being forced to. I even knew at the time I was being silly but I could not get her voice out of my head.
I still go by my married name because my ex told me I couldn’t. That was over five years ago. I am nothing if not stubborn.
Still don’t think you’re rascist, Sybil. 😉
WRT Danielle Steel – I just finished listening to one of her audio books. “H.R.H”. It was awful. The book – not the recording. The reader was quite nice – some guy who also guest stars on Law & Order all the time. He did an admirable job with something that must have bored him to tears.
It was so bad, I had visions of Danielle leaving her laptop on overnight and her pet chihuahua writing the book. (I have no idea if she has a pet chihuahua, I’m just speculating.) Repetitive boring repetitive boring repetitive boring… Too perfect characters. Assinine plot line that made me think it was just “called in”.
Ugh. Don’t even bother with this thing. I’m an inch away from writing off D.Steel novels forever.
SEE Gwen… you need to send me reviews to post. This will just be a wild and crazy texas review blog y’all
I use to love Danielle Steel soooooooooo much, of course I was like 14. *g* I wrote her off a while ago. Still love Zoya though.
I’m about to finish Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs. I’ll flip a review to you via email in a day or two – see if it’s what you want. I’ve been on a paranormal kick lately. I’ll probably swing back to contemps or histericals in a couple of weeks.
