REVIEW: First Blood by Sizemore, McCarthy, Green, and Brook

November 25, 2008

Book CoverDevon’s review of First Blood by Susan Sizemore, Erin McCarthy, Chris Marie Green, and Meljean Brook
Paranormal Anthology released by Berkley 05 August 2008

I’m pretty well-read in the Vampire Romance subgenre. That’s what got me reading romance again after a long hiatus. Blog title referenced it and all. It was kind of funny to find myself reading a vamp anthology with so many new to me authors. I’m a Meljean Brook fangirl, but have never read Sizemore or Green, and only one McCarthy novel. While I didn’t love all the entries, they made me curious to check out the authors I was unfamiliar with, so that’s a good thing. Read more

REVIEW: First Blood by Sizemore, McCarthy, Green, and Brook

November 24, 2008

Book CoverGwen's review of First Blood by Susan Sizemore, Erin McCarthy, Chris Marie Green, and Meljean Brook
Contemporary paranormal romance anthology released by Berkley 5 Aug 08

This anthology was very entertaining and the stories were a great way to pass some quick time.  Each story had a vampire in it - some used the character type more successfully than others, but all were entertaining at some level.  All four stories had some nice romance, a little bit of action, and a couple even made me go "awwww!" and mist up a bit.  Read on to see which had me reaching for a hanky and which had me scratching my head...  Read more

REVIEW: Demon Bound by Meljean Brook

November 3, 2008

Book CoverLawson's review of Demon Bound (Guardians, Book 4) by Meljean Brook
Paranormal romance released by Berkley Sensation 4 Nov 08

I really, really need to get the anthologies that have the short stories that go along with the Guardians series. Not that reading the books isn't enough, but Brook's world is amazing and any chance to step into it is a memorable reading experience. This installment in the Guardians series follows Jake Hawkins, who had a secondary role in Demon Night, gets his story in this one. There also some major revelations about the Guardian history and Michael, which if I talk about in depth would just spoil everything. So I won't.  :-P Read more

Review: Demon Night (The Guardians, Book 5) by Meljean Brook

Demon Night by Meljean BrookDevon’s Review of Demon Night (The Guardians, Book 5) by Meljean Brook
Paranormal romance released 5 Feb 08 by Berkeley Sensation

Demon Night, the fifth installment in The Guardians series (and third full length novel) features the interesting characters, complex plotting and wonderful relationship development I have quickly come to associate with Ms Brook. If you enjoy any of the above elements in your romance (and who doesn’t), I definitely recommend the story of recovering alcoholic turned bartender, Charlotte “Charlie” Newcomb, and wild west outlaw turned Guardian Angel, Ethan “Drifter” McCabe. Review: Demon Night (The Guardians, Book 5) by Meljean Brook

Book 5Lawson's review of Demon Night (The Guardians, Book 5) by Meljean Brook
Paranormal romance released February 5, 2008 by Berkley Sensation

The world that Meljean Brook has created is all encompassing, and Demon Night is no different. Both Demon Angel and Demon Moon were spectacular examples of a great story, with great characters in an imaginative world and how a series should be. The story of the Guardians fighting the demons and other creatures of Hell on the earth continues well with Ethan McCabe, also called Drifter, and Charlie Newcomb. Read more

October 29, 2007

Get your scares on without spending a dime... or leaving your chair.

Here are links to many public domain horror stories available online, and you can read them at your computer, or download them to a mobile device.  For

eapoe.jpgProject Gutenberg is a library of 17,000 free ebooks whose copyrights have expired. There's a searchable database of .txt and html files, and no signup or login required.  You aren't going to find any contemporary horror novels (don't expect to find a Stephen King, for example) but many of the classics are there.

Here's a sampling of my favorites...

The Raven and THE WORKS OF EDGAR ALLAN POE, Volume 2, which includes The Black Cat, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, The Cask of Amontillado, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Tell-Tale Heart, among others.
