Class In the Historical Romance

Class In the Historical Romance

lynnec.jpgBefore I start this – please remember I’m talking generalisations, about the zeitgeist. There are always exceptions to the rule, always exceptional people and situations, but citing their examples doesn’t make it the norm. Authors generally work with the fringes, with the exceptions, so there’s a real danger that they can become regarded as the reality.  read more…

REVIEW: This Duchess of Mine by Eloisa James

Book CoverLawson’s review of This Duchess of Mine (Desperate Duchesses, Book 5) by Eloisa James
Historical romance released by Avon 26 May 09

James’ Desperate Duchesses series and the first book start with meeting Jemma, the Duchess of Beaumont. From the first book through the fourth (has there really been four books in this series? . . .it seems like fewer than that, ah the sign of a good series . . .) Jemma and her Duke, Elijah, have danced around each other since her return from Paris at Elijah’s summons. Jemma has helped her friends as best she can find their happiness in the other books, and now it’s her turn. I know I have been waiting for this book as I really like a good reunion of husband and wife story. read more…

Favorites Remixed

Favorites Remixed

limecello.jpgI haven’t done a favorites post in a while, and after a few random conversations on Twitter (personal twitter accounts: limecello, gwen, c2, shannon, wendy)  I realized there were a wealth of favorites I could feature here. So that’s what I decided to do. Maybe this’ll happen again, maybe it won’t, but I had fun doing it, and I hope everyone else did and will too. So… enjoy. This is my new “favorites” post with some super star guests. I’ve very excited, and grateful that some of these very talented authors (and individuals) decided to contribute. read more…

REVIEW: Private Property by Leah Braemel

book cover Limecello’s review of Private Property (Hauberk Protection Series, Book 1) by Leah Braemel
Erotic romance ebook released by Samhain Publishing 29 Jan 09

I found Private Property through a contest that Moira Rogers is offering (50 series, or something like that). Leah Braemel’s story caught my attention, so I went to My Bookstore and More, and bought a copy. I always enjoy a well written ménage story, and I might be one of the few readers who fervently wishes for more love triangles. (I guess I missed that phase of romance. Well, and it has to be believable.) The premise of the book offers one, and while that’s not really how the story plays out, it’s still an enjoyable read. read more…

REVIEW: Memoirs of a Scandalous Red Dress by Elizabeth Boyle

Book CoverLawson’s review of Memoirs of a Scandalous Red Dress (The Bachelor Chronicles, Book 5) by Elizabeth Boyle
Historical romance released by Avon 28 Apr 09

Gwen gave a review of Confessions of a Little Black Gown, which is definitely different than the way I felt about that book. But then I mentioned in my review of Love Letters From a Duke that I didn’t like Felicity, now Duchess of Hollindrake. When I read Black Gown, I’ve got to say, she just made me like her even less, and really her overbearing presence in that one took away from Tally’s story, as well as their cousin Pippin and her life. So I picked up Red Dress I was bracing myself for more grating meddling and smugness of being a know-it-all from Felicity. It’s so nice that I was completely wrong. read more…

REVIEW: Casual Hex by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Book CoverLaura J’s review of Casual Hex (The Hex Series, Book 3) by Vicki Lewis Thompson
Contemporary Paranormal Romantic Comedy released by Onyx Publishing 3 Mar 09

When I first started reading again, a friend recommended most of the books I picked up. She knew I liked romantic comedies, but for some reason she never told me about Ms. Lewis-Thompson’s nerd books. Nope, I discovered those all on my own. Wandering around the book section at Wally World I saw Nerds Gone Wild, picked it up, read the back cover blurb and threw it in my cart. I started reading it a couple of days later and loved her quirky sense of humor. read more…

REVIEW: Swallowing Darkness by Laurell K. Hamilton

Book CoverLiviania’s review of Swallowing Darkness (Meredith Gentry, Book 7) by Laurell K. Hamilton
Paranormal romance released by Ballantine 4 Nov 08

I can’t quit Laurell K. Hamilton.  She writes a total piece of crap like Mistral’s Kiss and I think it’s safe to quit the Merry Gentry series.  Then she follows it up with A Lick of Frost, a one-two punch of featuring my favorite character from the series and more plot.  Fortunately, Swallowing Darkness makes me happy I haven’t been able to quit her yet.  (The lame double entendre title does cause a wince every time I think about it.)  read more…
