I think a lot of us have at least a passing fascination with child (or teen) stars, and what happens to them once they grow up. Being a child of the ’80s and early ’90s, I visualise The Daydreams as a cross between The Monkees and Buffy…, but without the vampires. I know there were a bunch of early 2000s shows about teens in bands, but most of those passed me by. Back to the fictional TV series at the centre of this novel: The Daydreams ran for two seasons and then imploded spectacularly on live TV as the season’s finale went horrifically wrong. Now, 13 years later, the one member of the original cast to have continued to enjoy the limelight for all the right reasons has declared his openness to a reunion with the other stars, much to the horror of our viewpoint character, Kat.

I’m a great fan of cosy mysteries and have been known to enjoy both horror stories and Young Adult dystopias, so this novel’s premise certainly intrigued me. The story opens with Celia, also a fan of cosy mysteries, going about her day with the nagging feeling that this isn’t her life and that there is something very fake about the small town everyone tells her is her home. The feelings intensify when an annoying neighbour is found dead, with Celia as the chief suspect, and it slowly dawns on Celia the man claiming to be her husband is actually holding her prisoner.

Egypt in the 1800’s, magical artifacts, archeological dig sites, an infuriatingly handsome British man, the search for Cleopatra’s lost tomb. This book has so many incredible elements and is such a fun time. I love it and can’t wait for Book 2. It’s marketed as The Mummy meets Death on the Nile, and that couldn’t be more perfect. It’s just the right combination of intrigue, action, and adventure.

At first I was pretty irritated that my car CD player suddenly stopping working. I listen to audiobooks constantly in the car. So I did the next best thing – plugged in my iPhone and pulled up some audiobooks to choose from. I came across this book and thought, “Why not?” I’ve never read Piper Rayne, and I’m always looking for new authors to read. After the first few pages, I was completely invested in this crazy family and look forward to getting into all their stories in the future.
