I had a difficult time starting this review. Why, you ask, since Lorelei James is one of my favorite authors? Because I’ve used every superlative known to man, and probably a few I made up myself along the way, in writing my reviews of her books over the years. There’s umpteen ways to describe characters, story, love scenes, etc. over and over again, and I think I’ve hit my limit. So this time around? Lorelei James is just damned good!
Walker is the middle child of the wealthy Lund family, the only one who didn’t fall into the family business. He’s co-owner of a construction company and is in his element when it comes to work. Having women flirt with him is another perk, but those women want his money, not him. So when he’s assaulted in a bar one night – a sexy woman lays a sassy-assed kiss on him – he wants more of her. What he doesn’t expect when he says goodbye to her is that she’d give him a fake name and phone number. But she does, and now Walker is determined to find her.
Trying to make herself feel better after running into her ex and his current flavor of the month, Trinity never thought grabbing the first handsome and sexy man she saw would affect her as it has. She can’t forget him or that kiss. Too bad he has no way to contact her after the little misunderstandings that happened between them last night. What she never expected, though, while helping out at the local community theater is to run into Walker there where he’s constructing the set she’s painting.
Both Walker and Trinity have their secrets from each other – nothing tragic or life-threatening, but definitely things that may have the other thinking twice about their relationship. It’s not the actual content of those secrets that hurt, it’s the fact they never shared. A huge lesson for this couple who know how to have fun together, joke and kid and smile during whatever they decide to do and steam up the bedroom windows when they finally hit the sheets. They get each other, these two who have branched off from their families on their own; though it’s Trinity who has taken the brunt of her dysfunctional family. I like that they support each other in everything, especially their jobs. And when Walker faces off with Trinity’s father – and then his own brothers and cousins? Great emotional scenes, from sheer unabated anger to heartbreaking confessions.
For me, once again Ms. James has written a family who has plenty of flaws, but they own up when needed and stand up for one another no questions asked. She gives readers intriguing and fun characters, people you want to know if it were possible, and a story most anyone would want to have happen to them. So the bottom line for me? This story is just what I needed.
