Sandy M’s review of Chain of Command (Greenway Range, Book 1) by HelenKay Dimon
Contemporary Romance published by Carina Press 9 Mar 15
Lately HelenKay Dimon has been the dream author all of us romance readers wish for – she’s had books releasing left and right. She’s releasing them faster than this reviewer can read them. Definitely something to look forward to. That’s especially so with the start of a new series, Greenway Range, which has already one fan in me with this first book where we meet Sawyer and Hailey. Coming from the same issue from different sides, all amid an attraction that is fierce and hot and isn’t about to go away any time soon.
Saywer is trying to start over after a tour in Afghanistan and all he went through there. Those huge losses have made him embrace family and friends much more closely; so much so he’s going to open a gun range with his best friends and sister. The ultimate loss of Rob, friend and mentor, has impacted him the most, so following through with his plans on the property Rob gave him is his last hope to begin truly living again.
It’s Hailey, though, who stands in his way. She’s had it with anything military. She’s lost her parents, friends, boygriend, and now her “uncle,” Rob, to the armed forces. So everything to do with the military is out. She now has a new problem – keeping greedy entrepreneurs off the property Rob left her in his will. They’ve come out of the woodwork, and so when Sawyer shows up on her doorstep, he has two strikes against him before he even opens his mouth.
They both make an impression on the other, though. To get to know one another, they make a deal on what can be part of their relationship initially, to see how things between them can really work. Too bad they can’t see into the future – they do have a lot of work to do. But they’re fun and funny, the banter shooting fast and furious. They’re sexy and hot, their bedroom antics smokin’ to no end. Now they just need a bit of trust back and forth. He can prove his claim to her property, but he doesn’t want to hurt her anymore than she has been and he’s as twisted up over her as a man can be. She’s not sure he’s got her in his bed just to get his hands on her property. So in between the fun and the lovin’, they have a lot to get through.
In the meantime, there’s best friends on both sides that have their own issues. Hailey’s friend Jessica has ex-boyfriend problems, a man who can’t keep his temper in check. Her other bestie, Kat, was Rob’s fiancee. Her journey of healing has been, obviously, long and emotional. Sawyer’s going to have his own problems when he discovers Jason has a thing for his sister, even though Molly’s the only one who’s figured that out so far. Marcus is in a relationship with the love of a good man, but Marcus isn’t ready for the world to know that yet. The next couple of books are going to be riotous, emotional, and loads of fun. Jason and Molly are up next and I can’t wait.
HelenKay Dimon is fast becoming a go-to author who I know won’t let me down, no matter what. From category romance to erotic romance, she does it all effortlessly, giving readers everything they need when it comes to the happily ever after we so desperately crave.
Summary:
Retired marine Sawyer Cain can’t forget all he’s seen and lost, but he can try to start over. Opening a gun range with his closest friends is the first step toward a new life—one where he finally buries the guilt he can’t seem to shake. So much depends on the property he needs to buy…and the gorgeous but completely frustrating woman who refuses to sell it.
Hailey Thorne is done—with loss and with anything military, after the closest thing she had to an uncle died in Afghanistan. When Sawyer shows up on her porch he has military written all over him. He’s one more in a long line of people who wants the land she inherited, and suddenly he’s everywhere she goes. Hailey can’t get the broad-shouldered, dirty-talking, dead-serious man out of her head. Or her life.
Sawyer’s not above using his skills in the bedroom to try to convince her to sell, and Hailey is more than willing to let him. Their pleasure-only arrangement works…until emotions get in the way. But Sawyer has a secret he’s convinced will have Hailey hating him forever, and Hailey’s not willing to risk loving anyone she could lose.
