The Courtesan’s Daughter by Claudia Dain
Award-winning author Claudia Dain tells a tale of impropriety and independence, and a mother and daughter determined to bend the rules of society in their favor.
Young Lady Caroline’s prospects for a suitable match are severely limited by her mother’s infamous past. Before Lady Sophia Dalby entered London society, she was a highly desired courtesan. What man of title, position, and wealth would marry a courtesan’s daughter?
Sophia’s solution is to purchase a husband for Carolin – the Earl of Ashdon – agreeing to settle his gambling debts if he will take her daughter’s hand. Insulted, Caroline refuses to have a husband who was bought for her.
But after meeting the fiery Lord Ashdon, she wonders if it wouldn’t be satisfying to have him pay for her, perhaps with a priceless pearl necklace? With Sophia pulling the strings, Lord Ashdon may get more than he bargained for and Caroline may get just what she wants.
Courtesan’s are all over the place!
This is Claudia Dain’s first book with Berkley. And will be printed in trade size. I have heard tons of good things about Dain and have picked up a few books but haven’t had a chance to read them yet.
I so wished I had finished this before RWA in Dallas because people kept talking about it! And I hadn’t gotten far into it. I hope to get to it soon! From what Dain said it will be a trilogy and each book sounds fantastic.
I’ve loved past Dain books and I will be buying this one. I can’t figure out who gets published in trade and who doesn’t. It’s wonky, don’t you think? I also would have preferred an art cover rather than this girl. or see Gwen’s previous comment about naked men.
I like the picture, but it might just be that I’ve always wanted pretty long brunette hair. I’ll be getting this one, too.
Not just “naked” but NEKKID men!
What Jane said. In fact, someone was talking about Ms. Dain recently and I re-read a couple of her books and still enjoyed them.
I have most of her books but I like her regency novella “Union” best of all. I wrote her months ago when I saw on her website she was writing Regency, but I guess she must be busy writing since I didn’t hear back.
I’ve read a few of her books and liked them – some more than others. I LOVED A Kiss to Die For – a Western!
Either this book is already getting good buzz or there are enough people looking forward to it that it seems like good buzz.
Sounds like a winner–I’ll give it a try.
It’s not a trilogy, I don’t think. I think its a series. And Ned is currently reading it and enjoying it.
I’ve like her past books, and this one does sound good. I would have tried it even if I hadn’t read her before. I don’t think the cover’s that bad, though there is something to be said for nekkid men, lol.
I keep hearing about this book, and as I am skeptical of any Regency Historical and have never read a Dain book, I’m on the fence. But the girl on the cover makes the book look like some sort of YA Inspirational Historical–but maybe that’s just me.
BUT, not and. That’s what I get for singing while I type.
