Kaitlyn‘s review of Tress of the Emerald Sea (Secret Projects, Book 1) by Brandon Sanderson
Fantasy Audiobook published by Dragonsteel, LLC 23 Apr 24
One thing about me is I LOVE a bit of whimsy.
Sanderson really knows how to create a unique, magical world. His world building is definitely one of his biggest strengths, and I’m 100% here for it. He has created a wonderfully whimsical world here, but what truly makes this book absolutely perfect is the un-serious narration. I need more books narrated by Hoid, because this is seriously such a fun time.
I’m on a big Cosmere journey right now, but you can totally read this book without reading any other Sanderson books. There are some cool little Mistborn references, but there’s no Cosmere info you need to thoroughly enjoy this story.
If you’re looking for a fun fantasy standalone to binge, this is perfect. It’s a whimsical adventure with excellent world building and endearing characters. I highly recommend this one.
Summary:
The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?
