Kaitlyn‘s review of Red Rising Series by Pierce Brown
Fantasy Adventure published by Del Rey 28 Jan 14 – 25 Jul 23
If you had told me when I first started reading Red Rising that this series would have some of the most beautifully written lines I’ve ever seen and have me in tears multiple times I’d have laughed in your face and said “have you seen the sh!t that comes out of these boy’s mouths, especially that Sevro clown? Yeah, nice try.” I definitely wouldn’t have believed Sevro would become one of my favorite characters too. But here we are, things came a long way from book one.
This isn’t just an action-packed sci-fi series. This is a deep dive into the human psyche and a complex study of humanity. The good and the absolute worst the human race is capable of. I loved every second of it. Even when the atrocities had me sick to my stomach, I couldn’t help but admire the way Brown tells the story as the series progresses.
Mustang is my OG favorite and stayed that way through it all. So many other characters grew on me in ways I never thought possible. I still can’t believe I love Sevro so much. 😂 Darrow I have a love/hate relationship with. He is usually facing impossible situation after impossible situation, so I tried to show him grace. He makes it really hard sometimes though, but we’re in a good place right now.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series and can’t wait for the final book. I probably should have waited to read it, though, since it looks like Book 7 isn’t coming until next year. But that just means I’ll need to do a reread and I’m not mad about that!

Summary:
From Red Rising:
“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.
