Kaitlyn‘s review of Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Science Fiction published by Ballantine Books 4 May 21

This is my first time using an audiobook for a first-time read and it couldn’t have been a better experience. I think it makes this book even more enjoyable. The alien sound effects are a great addition, and I couldn’t listen to this fast enough.

The plot is fast paced and incredibly exciting. Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship very far from home, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Slowly things start coming back to him and he realizes he is on a critical mission to save all of humanity. The science is easy to understand and the wit is highly amusing.

I love sci-fi movies, but this is my first sci-fi book. I think this is a great place to start if you’re looking to get into sci-fi or just want an incredibly fun book. I would highly recommend the audio for this one. It’s so well done, and I think this is definitely something I’ll re-listen to multiple times. The movie for this comes out March 2026 and I can’t wait!

I’m in my sci-fi era now and starting Red Rising. Let me know if you have any other sci-fi recs I should add to my TBR.

Grade: A

Summary:

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?
