Kaitlyn‘s review of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Fantasy published by Anchor 13 Sep 11

The Night Circus just became one of my favorite books of all time. I absolutely adored this whimsical, magical adventure. I don’t even know half of what was going on, but I LOVED it. Easy Grade A. I didn’t want to put it down, and I kept thinking about it every time I had to step away.

This is one of those all-consuming books dripping with magic. I could almost feel and taste the circus, and I vehemently wish I could experience the magic myself. I put off reading this one because I didn’t know if it was for me. I usually enjoy books like this to a point, because I hate being left with questions and never find the endings satisfying. I shouldn’t have put this off though, because I truly enjoyed everything about this book.

Maybe it’s a case of the right book at the right time, but this really is the adventure I had been yearning for. This is a book I’ll be thinking about for a long time. There were so many quotes that resonated with me, but this is probably my favorite from the entire book:

“You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows what they might do because of it, because of your words.”

As an avid reader who has multiple stories imprinted on her soul, I felt that deeply. I hope you read a book soon that becomes your blood, self, and purpose.

Grade: A+

Summary:

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.
